The final day of the official Fan Fest on Copacabana Beach. The arena — 5,000 square metres of sand, capacity 15,000 — opens at 2 pm with the apuração broadcast on LED screens from 3:30 pm. Once the champion is crowned and the confetti falls, Alcione takes the stage at 6:30 pm. The Maranhão-born singer, one of the greatest voices in samba and MPB, has been closing Carnaval stages for decades. After Alcione, the Samba da Volta — the ceremonial final roda of the official season — winds down the programme by 10 pm. This is the last night of the Fan Fest before it returns for the Desfile das Campeãs on Saturday the 21st.

Practicalities: Access requires prior facial registration via the Rio Carnaval app. Arena at Posto 3, near Rua República do Peru. Metro to Cardeal Arcoverde or Siqueira Campos. No bags larger than A4 permitted. Stay hydrated — forecast high 36°C with possible afternoon showers.

The Palácio do Samba, as regulars call it, has positioned itself as the place to watch the apuração in Lapa — surrounded by torcidas from all twelve Grupo Especial schools, cold chopp, caldos and a high-definition LED screen with PA sound. Grupo Arruda and Samba do Xoxó provide live music between the note readings, with DJ Nicolle Neumann filling the gaps. The venue, run by Carlos Firmino, occupies a large covered courtyard on the corner of Rua da Relação and Lavradio, decorated with murals celebrating orixás and Nelson Mandela. A who’s-who of samba — Jorge Aragão, Xande de Pilares, Sombrinha — has passed through these doors in recent months. Free entry, collaborative contribution encouraged.

Practicalities: Arrive early — the queue stretches down Rua da Relação on busy nights. Metro Cinelândia + 10-minute walk. Cash for drinks helps. The surrounding Lapa bar strip will be buzzing after the apuração.

The last official bloco of the Rio Carnaval de Rua 2026. While the rest of the city digests the final night at the Sapucaí, this Zona Norte grêmio recreativo gathers in Engenho de Dentro to close out the street season. Seven blocos are listed for Ash Wednesday across the city — this one, with its 6 pm concentration, brings the curtain down on 238 official blocos that paraded between February 13 and 18. A neighbourhood affair: expect brass, marchinhas, cold beer from corner bars and the bittersweet feeling of the last cortejo.

Practicalities: Engenho de Dentro is on the SuperVia train line. Expect a small, local crowd. Bring cash for street vendors. The bloco runs into the early evening.

If the Casarão do Firmino is the yard, Carioca da Gema is the living room. This two-storey casarão on Mem de Sá has hosted nightly samba and chorinho since the early 2000s and remains one of Lapa’s most reliable music houses. Midweek programming leans toward samba de raiz — expect intimate rodas, strong caipirinhas and a mixed crowd of locals and visitors. The balcony on the second floor offers breathing room when the ground floor fills up. On a night like Ash Wednesday, when much of Lapa is in hangover mode, places like this keep the flame alive.

Practicalities: Av. Mem de Sá, 79. Cover charge applies. Tables fill fast — arrive by 8 pm. Card accepted. Walking distance from Casarão do Firmino and the rest of the Lapa strip.

The antidote to five days of Carnaval: a quiet beer at an outdoor table in Botafogo. Rua Voluntários da Pátria and the surrounding streets — Rua Arnaldo Quintela, Rua Capitão Salomão — form one of Rio’s most walkable bar corridors. The Quartinho on Arnaldo Quintela draws the alternative crowd. The Humaitá end of the strip offers wine bars and low-key botecos. Metro Botafogo makes this the easiest nightlife zone to reach from anywhere in the Zona Sul. On Ash Wednesday, expect lighter crowds than usual — which is exactly the point.

Practicalities: Metro Botafogo, exit toward Voluntários da Pátria. Most bars accept card. The street fills up from 7 pm onward. Safer and calmer than Lapa for late-night drinks.
