Wednesday, 18 February 2026 · Quarta-feira de Cinzas · The confetti settles, the champion rises
01 Tonight’s Vibe Menu
Ash Wednesday in Rio is a city between two states — the last embers of five straight days of Carnaval and the first silence of Lent. By late afternoon, twelve schools of samba will know their fate: the apuração at the Cidade do Samba, broadcast from 4 pm on Globo, will crown the champion and decide which school drops to the Série Ouro. At the Fan Fest arena on Copacabana Beach, Alcione takes the stage at 6:30 pm after the results are read, followed by the Samba da Volta — the final roda of the official Carnaval season. In Lapa, the Casarão do Firmino has been running the Samba da Apuração all afternoon with Grupo Arruda and Samba do Xoxó. The last official bloco of 2026, the Grêmio Recreativo Chave de Ouro, steps off in Engenho de Dentro at 6 pm. After that, the city exhales — and the bars of Lapa, Botafogo and the Zona Sul take over. The Desfile das Campeãs returns to the Sapucaí on Saturday the 21st.

1Alcione — Fan Fest Rio Capital do Carnaval
Live show
ARENA OPEN since 2:00 pm
ALCIONE 6:30 pm
CLOSE 10:00 pm
PRICE Free (cadastro facial via app)
The final day of the official Fan Fest on Copacabana Beach. The arena — 5,000 square metres of sand, capacity 15,000 — opens at 2 pm with the apuração broadcast on LED screens from 3:30 pm. Once the champion is crowned and the confetti falls, Alcione takes the stage at 6:30 pm. The Maranhão-born singer, one of the greatest voices in samba and MPB, has been closing Carnaval stages for decades. After Alcione, the Samba da Volta — the ceremonial final roda of the official season — winds down the programme by 10 pm. This is the last night of the Fan Fest before it returns for the Desfile das Campeãs on Saturday the 21st.
Practicalities: Access requires prior facial registration via the Rio Carnaval app. Arena at Posto 3, near Rua República do Peru. Metro to Cardeal Arcoverde or Siqueira Campos. No bags larger than A4 permitted. Stay hydrated — forecast high 36°C with possible afternoon showers.
Praia de Copacabana, Posto 3 – near Rua República do Peru, Copacabana
2Casarão do Firmino — Samba da Apuração
Samba
STATUS Running since 1:00 pm
PRICE Free / collaborative
The Palácio do Samba, as regulars call it, has positioned itself as the place to watch the apuração in Lapa — surrounded by torcidas from all twelve Grupo Especial schools, cold chopp, caldos and a high-definition LED screen with PA sound. Grupo Arruda and Samba do Xoxó provide live music between the note readings, with DJ Nicolle Neumann filling the gaps. The venue, run by Carlos Firmino, occupies a large covered courtyard on the corner of Rua da Relação and Lavradio, decorated with murals celebrating orixás and Nelson Mandela. A who’s-who of samba — Jorge Aragão, Xande de Pilares, Sombrinha — has passed through these doors in recent months. Free entry, collaborative contribution encouraged.
Practicalities: Arrive early — the queue stretches down Rua da Relação on busy nights. Metro Cinelândia + 10-minute walk. Cash for drinks helps. The surrounding Lapa bar strip will be buzzing after the apuração.
Rua da Relação / Rua do Lavradio – Lapa
3Grêmio Recreativo Chave de Ouro
Street bloco
CONCENTRAÇÃO 6:00 pm
PRICE Free
The last official bloco of the Rio Carnaval de Rua 2026. While the rest of the city digests the final night at the Sapucaí, this Zona Norte grêmio recreativo gathers in Engenho de Dentro to close out the street season. Seven blocos are listed for Ash Wednesday across the city — this one, with its 6 pm concentration, brings the curtain down on 238 official blocos that paraded between February 13 and 18. A neighbourhood affair: expect brass, marchinhas, cold beer from corner bars and the bittersweet feeling of the last cortejo.
Practicalities: Engenho de Dentro is on the SuperVia train line. Expect a small, local crowd. Bring cash for street vendors. The bloco runs into the early evening.
Rua Ana Leonídia, 85 – Engenho de Dentro
4Carioca da Gema — Live Samba & Chorinho
Samba de raiz
DOORS 7:00 pm
PRICE Cover ~R$30–50
If the Casarão do Firmino is the yard, Carioca da Gema is the living room. This two-storey casarão on Mem de Sá has hosted nightly samba and chorinho since the early 2000s and remains one of Lapa’s most reliable music houses. Midweek programming leans toward samba de raiz — expect intimate rodas, strong caipirinhas and a mixed crowd of locals and visitors. The balcony on the second floor offers breathing room when the ground floor fills up. On a night like Ash Wednesday, when much of Lapa is in hangover mode, places like this keep the flame alive.
Practicalities: Av. Mem de Sá, 79. Cover charge applies. Tables fill fast — arrive by 8 pm. Card accepted. Walking distance from Casarão do Firmino and the rest of the Lapa strip.
Av. Mem de Sá, 79 – Lapa
5Botafogo Bar Strip
Bar crawl
FROM 6:00 pm
PRICE Varies
The antidote to five days of Carnaval: a quiet beer at an outdoor table in Botafogo. Rua Voluntários da Pátria and the surrounding streets — Rua Arnaldo Quintela, Rua Capitão Salomão — form one of Rio’s most walkable bar corridors. The Quartinho on Arnaldo Quintela draws the alternative crowd. The Humaitá end of the strip offers wine bars and low-key botecos. Metro Botafogo makes this the easiest nightlife zone to reach from anywhere in the Zona Sul. On Ash Wednesday, expect lighter crowds than usual — which is exactly the point.
Practicalities: Metro Botafogo, exit toward Voluntários da Pátria. Most bars accept card. The street fills up from 7 pm onward. Safer and calmer than Lapa for late-night drinks.
Rua Voluntários da Pátria – Botafogo
04 Suggested Route Evening to midnight
6:00 PM — COPACABANA
Fan Fest — Apuração & Alcione
Catch the final apuração notes on the LED screen (from 4 pm). Alcione takes the stage around 6:30 pm. Samba da Volta closes things by 8 pm. Free, beachfront, and the most communal way to end Carnaval season.
8:30 PM — LAPA
Casarão do Firmino → Carioca da Gema
Metro from Cardeal Arcoverde to Cinelândia (15 min). Walk into Lapa. Start at the Casarão do Firmino if the samba is still rolling, then migrate to Carioca da Gema for the roda de raiz. Rua Joaquim Silva and the Arcos connect everything.
10:30 PM — LAPA / BOTAFOGO
Bar crawl or wind down
Stay in Lapa — Nova Capela (open until 1 am) for a late cabrito sandwich, or the Arco-Íris bar on Mem de Sá for one more round. Alternatively, grab a ride to Botafogo for a quieter close at the Voluntários da Pátria strip. Either way, Carnaval is officially over. Rest well.
05 Still Going After 10 pm Late night
Ash Wednesday is a wind-down night, not a rager. That said, the Lapa corridor — Rua Joaquim Silva, Rua do Lavradio, Av. Mem de Sá — stays open late year-round. Nova Capela (Av. Mem de Sá, 96, open until 1 am weekdays) is a 120-year-old institution where the cabrito is legendary and the beer is always cold. Sacrilégio (Av. Mem de Sá, 81) runs samba and pagode programming with dose-dupla drinks on Wednesdays. In Botafogo, the Rua Arnaldo Quintela bars stay open past midnight. Copacabana’s Bip Bip (Rua Almirante Gonçalves, 50) is always a wildcard — the tiny corner bar has hosted spontaneous samba and choro sessions for decades, no stage, no cover, just music. Check if they’re open tonight. Blue Note Rio is dark until Thursday the 20th (João Sabiá).
06 Plan B Alternatives
›
Sacrilégio — Av. Mem de Sá, 81, Lapa. Samba and pagode programming with dose-dupla drinks on Wednesdays. Cover varies.
›
Rio Scenarium — Rua do Lavradio, 20, Centro. If open tonight (confirm on Instagram @rioscenarium), this three-storey antique-shop-turned-samba-house is one of Lapa’s crown jewels. Cover ~R$40–80.
›
Leviano Bar — Lapa. Wednesday programme often features samba or forró. Check @levianobar. Cover varies.
›
Desfile das Campeãs — Marquês de Sapucaí, Saturday 21 February. The top six schools return to the avenue. If you didn’t get Sambódromo tickets during the main nights, this is your second chance. Tickets via the official Rio Carnaval site.
›
Feijoada recovery — Tomorrow (Thursday) marks the first “normal” day. Rio’s best feijoadas: Casa da Feijoada (Ipanema), Bar do Mineiro (Santa Teresa), Bolinha (Copacabana). Soak up the last of Carnaval.
07 Getting Around Transport intel
Metro: Ash Wednesday is ponto facultativo until 2 pm — expect reduced service. Check MetrôRio for the Carnaval special timetable. Lines 1 and 2 serve Copacabana (Cardeal Arcoverde / Siqueira Campos), Botafogo, and Centro/Cinelândia for Lapa access. Metro typically closes at midnight on weekdays.
Ride-hailing: Surge pricing likely around Copacabana during the apuração and after the Alcione show. Pre-set a pickup point a few blocks from the Fan Fest to avoid the crush.
Road closures: Some residual Carnaval closures may remain around Centro and the Sapucaí area. Avoid driving through the Centro corridor.
Weather alert: Maximum 36°C forecast with possible isolated showers from the afternoon onward as a cold front approaches. Carry water and light rain protection.
08 Neighbourhood Picks By zone
Lapa / Centro
The epicentre
Casarão do Firmino for the apuração party. Carioca da Gema for live samba after dark. Nova Capela for a midnight cabrito. Sacrilégio for Wednesday dose-dupla. The Rua Joaquim Silva corridor and the Arcos da Lapa connect everything — this is Ash Wednesday’s centre of gravity.
Copacabana
Beachfront send-off
The Fan Fest arena at Posto 3 is the main event: apuração on the big screen, Alcione live, and the Samba da Volta to close the season. Blue Note Rio is dark tonight. Bip Bip on Rua Almirante Gonçalves is always worth checking — if the door is open and there’s music, pull up a stool.
Botafogo / Zona Sul
Quiet close
Rua Voluntários da Pátria and Rua Arnaldo Quintela — craft beer bars, outdoor seating, easy metro access. After five days of blocos, this is where the city comes to decompress. Quartinho (Arnaldo Quintela) for the alternative crowd. Humaitá for wine and chill.
Zona Norte
Last cortejo
Grêmio Recreativo Chave de Ouro in Engenho de Dentro (6 pm) — the final bloco of the official Carnaval de Rua 2026. Neighbourhood atmosphere, local crowd, brass and marchinhas. Tonight belongs to the die-hards who refuse to let it end.
