The Apuração — Watch from São Paulo

\n

Rio’s Grupo Especial apuração begins at 16h at the Cidade do Samba. São Paulo’s own apuração took place yesterday (Tuesday 17) at the Anhembi, crowning Mocidade Alegre as the 2026 Grupo Especial champion. The SP Grupo Especial desfiles were held on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 at the Sambódromo do Anhembi. Today all eyes turn to Rio for the reveal of which escola takes the carioca crown. Globo and Globoplay carry it live. The Desfile das Campeãs in São Paulo is Saturday 21 at the Anhembi from 20h.

\n
\n

Paulistão — Quartas de Final Set

\n

The first phase wrapped on Sunday with all eight games played simultaneously during Carnaval. The confirmed quarter-final matchups for Sunday 22 February (single-match format, higher seed hosts): Novorizontino vs Santos, Palmeiras vs Capivariano, RB Bragantino vs São Paulo, and Portuguesa vs Corinthians. Ponte Preta and Velo Clube are relegated to the Série A2. Semifinals: March 1. Final: March 4 and 8 (two legs).

\n
\n

Museums — Reopening Schedule

\n

\n

\n

MASP

\n

The MASP’s 2025 cycle — Histórias da ecologia, Abel Rodríguez: Mogaje Guihu, and Minerva Cuevas: Ecologia Social — closed in early February. The 2026 programme, Histórias latino-americanas, launches March 6 with Sandra Gamarra Heshiki, Claudia Alarcón and La Chola Poblete. The permanent collection in the Edifício Lina Bo Bardi (cavaletes de cristal) remains open. Check masp.org.br for exact Cinzas hours — the museum is normally closed Mondays and open Tue–Sun. R$75/R$37 meia. Free Tuesdays (Nubank). Metrô: Trianon-MASP (Linha 2-Verde).

\n
\n

\n

\n

Pinacoteca de São Paulo

\n

Across three buildings — Pina Luz, Pina Estação, Pina Contemporânea — the Pinacoteca runs Trabalho de Carnaval (200+ works on the labour behind Brazil’s biggest festival) at Pina Contemporânea. Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s Meteorium installation closed Feb 1 at Pina Luz. Lenora de Barros and the Carnaval permanent collection continue. On Cinzas, typically reopens from 12h. Wed–Mon 10h–18h. R$30/R$15 meia. Free Saturdays. Metrô: Luz (Linha 1-Azul).

\n
\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

Itaú Cultural

\n

Game+ Arte, Cultura e Comunidade — 51 games, 25 consoles, a panorama of videogame history. Also running: Gordon Parks retrospective at Instituto Tomie Ohtake (until March 8) and Demonstra: Pela Poética Def at Centro Cultural Fiesp (until May 3). Itaú Cultural stayed open through Carnaval (11h–19h). Free. Av. Paulista, 149.

\n
\n

\n

\n

More Highlights

\n

Museu da Língua Portuguesa: Funk: Um grito de ousadia e liberdade (expanded from MAR). Museu do Ipiranga: Debret em Questão (until May 17). Japan House: Imbuídos das Forças das Florestas do Japão — master carpentry exhibition. CCBB: CORpo MANIFESTO by Sérgio Adriano H. Check each venue for Cinzas hours before heading out.

\n
\n

\n

\n

Culture tip: The gap between the closing of the Histórias da ecologia programme and the March 6 launch of Histórias latino-americanas means the MASP is in transition. The cavaletes de cristal permanent collection remains worth the visit. For guaranteed cultural programming today, Itaú Cultural on the Paulista is your safest bet.

\n
\n

04
\nTransport & Mobility
\nGetting around

\n

\n

\n

Metrô / CPTM

\n

Normal weekday operation resumes today. Linhas 1-Azul, 2-Verde, 3-Vermelha, 15-Prata from 4h40 to midnight. CPTM lines from 4h to midnight. The extended Carnaval operations (24h at Palmeiras-Barra Funda, Portuguesa-Tietê) ended overnight. Next 24h Metrô operation: Saturday 21 (Linhas 1, 2, 3, 15 from midnight).

\nNORMAL SERVICE
\n
\n

\n

\n

Roads / SPTrans

\n

Rodízio de carros SUSPENDED today — drive any plate. Returns Thursday (normal weekday restrictions, final digits 7 and 8). Truck restrictions (ZMRC) remain in effect as normal. SPTrans bus service returns to regular weekday schedules. Special Carnaval lines to Anhembi no longer running. Expect light morning traffic building to normal by midday.

\nNO RODÍZIO
\n
\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

Airports

\n

Congonhas (CGH) and Guarulhos (GRU) operating normally. Expect heavier traffic to Guarulhos this afternoon and evening as the Carnaval exodus returns. Expresso Aeroporto (CPTM) running on normal schedule via Palmeiras-Barra Funda. Budget extra time for GRU runs.

\nRETURN TRAFFIC
\n
\n

\n

\n

Ride-hail

\n

Surge pricing easing as Carnaval winds down. Morning rides should be close to standard fares. Afternoon may see moderate surges in Faria Lima / Paulista corridors as offices partially reopen. 99 and Uber both operational.

\nNORMAL
\n
\n

\n

\n

Transport tip: No rodízio today is a bonus for drivers, but the real congestion risk comes from Carnaval return traffic on the Marginal Tietê and highways this evening. If heading to Guarulhos, leave early. Metrô is the most reliable bet — clean, on schedule, and air-conditioned.

B3 REOPENS TODAY — Shortened Quarta-feira de Cinzas session: pré-abertura 12h45, trading 13h–17h55

\n

Ibovespa: last close 186,464 (-0.69%, Fri 13 Feb). Intraday record 190,561 on Feb 11. Week: +1.92%. YTD: +15.73%

\n

USD/BRL: R$5.23 at close (+0.60% on the day). Dollar at weakest since May 2024

\n

Selic: 15.00%. Copom signalled rate cut at March 18 meeting. Focus consensus: 14.50% in March, 12.25% year-end

\n

Banks reopen today from 12h. Pix and ATMs function 24/7

\n

Market trend: The Ibovespa enters the post-Carnaval period after hitting a record 190,561 intraday on Feb 11 before profit-taking. Foreign institutional inflows have surpassed R$33 billion through Feb 11 — more than all of 2025’s R$25.4 billion total. The real has strengthened to its best levels since May 2024. B3’s shortened Cinzas session (13h–17h55) is the first trading opportunity since Friday’s close. The Copom’s signal of a March rate cut has become the dominant theme heading into the post-Carnaval period.
