Rio de Janeiro Nightlife Guide for Sunday, May 17, 2026
—The mood. A quiet Sunday with one ticketed headline show and three historic samba rodas.
—Main ticket. Amy Reggaehouse with Clariana Fróes at Blue Note Rio, 19h, Copacabana.
—Free samba. Pedra do Sal from 18h, Bip Bip from 19h, and Cacique de Ramos in Olaria from 17h.
—Weather. 28 °C, partly sunny, 15 % rain. This is the warm dry night before rain returns Monday.
—Best plan. Pedra do Sal at 18h, then Amy Reggaehouse at Blue Note Rio at 19h.
—Why. You get one free historic roda and the only marquee booking of the night.
—If you choose one. Pick Amy Reggaehouse if you want the rare show. Pick Pedra do Sal or Bip Bip if the budget is zero.
—Do not overthink it. This is a warm Sunday. Keep the route simple and stay near Copacabana or Saúde.
—Pedra do Sal into Amy Reggaehouse. Beach until 16h. Ride to Pedra do Sal by 17h30. Spend one hour on the cobblestones, then ride to Copacabana by 18h45, about 12 minutes / R$25. Amy Reggaehouse starts at 19h at Blue Note Rio. Out by 21h30, with time for dinner on Av. Atlântica. The hybrid plan: one free historic roda plus one ticketed marquee.
—The two-cobblestones Sunday. Cacique de Ramos Feijoada in Olaria from 14h. Because this is the third Sunday of the month, it means free feijoada plus roda from 17h. Ride back to Centro by 19h30, then Pedra do Sal from 20h. Two foundational samba addresses in one Sunday, about R$80 in rides, free entry both.
—The Copacabana Sunday. Beach until 16h. Dinner on Av. Atlântica from 17h30. Amy Reggaehouse at Blue Note Rio at 19h. Walk 15 minutes to Bip Bip for the Sunday samba roda from 21h30. Two Copacabana venues, two genres, no transport beyond the metro stop pair.
—The free Sunday. Skip the ticket. Pedra do Sal from 18h, then ride to Bip Bip Copacabana by 21h for samba. Total spend: about R$40 in rides plus drinks. The local plan.
—Note.
—Note. —
—Pedra do Sal. The Sunday roda winds down on the cobblestones and usually stops around midnight.
—Note. —
—Bip Bip. The Sunday samba roda is still in its late stretch after 22h. It is small, crowded, cash-based and best for listening, not shouting.
—Note. —
—Cacique de Ramos. The Olaria roda closes earlier, usually around 22h–23h.
—Note. —
—Rio Scenarium. Closed Sunday. The casa runs Wednesday to Saturday only.
—Note. —
—Carioca da Gema. Typically closed Sunday.
—Note. —
—Beco do Rato. R. Joaquim Silva, Lapa. Sunday hours are 12h–21h, because the casa opens early for feijoada and closes by 21h.
—Note. —Circo Voador and Vivo Rio. Both are dark Sunday. Vivo Rio is dark after last night’s Emicida show.
—Note. —
—Blue Note Rio. The piano bar and calçadão continue after Amy Reggaehouse. The casa stays open with free piano programming on the open-air boardwalk.
—Note. —
—Tomorrow. Monday May 18 brings the cooling pattern: 26 °C and 50 % rain. Pedra do Sal Monday is the legendary roda night, but rain may dampen attendance. Bip Bip is closed Monday.
—Note.
—Note.
—Note. —
—Blue Note Rio. Av. Atlântica 1910, Copacabana. Metro Cardeal Arcoverde, Yellow Line 1, five minutes on foot.
—Note. —
—Bip Bip. R. Almirante Gonçalves 50, Copacabana. Two minutes from Metro Cardeal Arcoverde and about 15 minutes on foot from Blue Note Rio.
—Note. —
—Pedra do Sal. R. Argemiro Bulcão / Largo João da Baiana, Saúde. Use Metro Uruguaiana plus VLT to Parada dos Museus, then walk five minutes. From Copacabana, a direct ride is about 12 minutes / R$25.
—Note. —
—Cacique de Ramos. R. Uranos 1326, Olaria. No metro adjacent. Count about 25 minutes by ride-hailing from Zona Sul / R$50.
—Note. —
—Weather. 28 °C, 15 % rain, partly sunny. This is the warm dry day. Monday brings 26 °C and 50 % rain; Tuesday 23 °C and 50 %; Wednesday 23 °C and 35 %; Thursday 22 °C and 55 %. Bring sunglasses for afternoon and a light layer for the late return.
—Note. —
—Ride-hailing. Sunday surge should be low. The Cacique de Ramos return from Olaria is the longest route; pre-order if you go there. Metro runs reduced Sunday hours, so plan ride-hailing for any late return.
—Note. —
—Safety. Copacabana Av. Atlântica is well-lit and busy through midnight. Around Pedra do Sal, stay with the roda crowd and ride back rather than walking side streets after the music ends.
—Note.
›Beco do Rato Sunday feijoada. R. Joaquim Silva 11, Lapa. Open 12h–21h for feijoada and afternoon roda. The Lapa option if Pedra do Sal is not on the route.
›Blue Note Rio brunch + calçadão. Av. Atlântica 1910. Sunday opening at 13h includes brunch before the 19h show. The calçadão and piano bar continue through the evening with free piano music.
›Samba da Feira at Praça Lima Barreto. Saturday’s all-day samba on R. do Lavradio is gone, but the Lavradio antiquário Sunday feira still runs until about 15h. Lunch on Mem de Sá afterward is the natural pivot.
›Nova Capela. Av. Mem de Sá 96, Lapa. The 1903 boteco with late kitchen and cabrito assado as the house dish. Good Sunday dinner option if the roda plan ends in Lapa.
What is Amy Reggaehouse?
Amy Reggaehouse is a project created in 2016 by the Bahian cantora Clariana Fróes, dedicated to releituras of the Amy Winehouse catalogue with arranjos that blend reggae, soul, jazz and Brazilian music.
The project won The Winehouse Awards 2020 as the best Amy Winehouse tribute in the world.
Clariana Fróes is a Salvador-born singer increasingly recognised in MPB; the project has toured Salvador, Belo Horizonte, São Luís and the Pelourinho circuit, and recorded its first audiovisual at the Sesc Casa do Comércio in Salvador in March 2026.
Tonight’s show at Blue Note Rio (Sunday May 17, 2026 at 19h) is part of the post-recording tour.
Is Pedra do Sal open on Sunday?
Yes. Pedra do Sal runs its samba roda from Friday through Monday, with Sunday starting at 18h on the Largo João da Baiana / R. Argemiro Bulcão in the Saúde-Gamboa neighbourhood.
Sunday is the second-busiest of the four roda nights (Monday is the legendary peak; Friday is the second-density night). Entry is free; food and drink come from barraca vendors on the cobblestones, cash only — bring small bills.
The site was designated a Território Remanescente de Quilombo Urbano by the Fundação Cultural Palmares in 2005. Closest metro is Uruguaiana (Line 1) plus VLT to Parada dos Museus, or direct ride from Copacabana approximately R$25.
Where is Cacique de Ramos and what’s the Sunday feijoada?
Cacique de Ramos is the historical samba quadra at R. Uranos 1326 in Olaria, on the Zona Norte.
The casa has been running Sunday rodas for decades and is where Zeca Pagodinho, Beth Carvalho, Arlindo Cruz and Jorge Aragão came up before becoming national figures. The roda starts every Sunday at 17h.
On the third Sunday of each month, the casa runs the famous Feijoada do Cacique de Ramos starting at 13h with free entry — Sunday May 17, 2026 is the third Sunday, so the feijoada runs today.
Ride from Zona Sul approximately 25 minutes / R$50; no metro adjacent. The audience is multi-generational and family-oriented, less tourist-heavy than the central Rio rodas.
What time is Sunday samba at Bip Bip?
Bip Bip’s Sunday samba roda starts at 19h. The bar’s standing programme runs Tuesday choro 20h, Wednesday bossa nova 20h, Thursday samba 21h, Sunday samba 19h; Friday and Saturday are open with rotating informal programming.
Bip Bip occupies 18 square metres at R. Almirante Gonçalves 50 in Copacabana (since 1968) and runs no door, no cover, no waiter service — customers pull beer from the fridge and the bar runs on the honour system. Arrive early for any seat.
The bar’s culture is strict: no clapping mid-song, no shouting, no photography during music. Metro Cardeal Arcoverde two minutes’ walk.
What’s the Rio weather forecast for the week ahead?
Sunday May 17 reaches 28 °C with 15% rain probability — partly sunny, the warmest day of the week ahead. Monday May 18 cools to 26 °C with 50% rain — the next system arriving. Tuesday May 19 cools further to 23 °C with 50% rain.
Wednesday May 20 at 23 °C with 35% rain. Thursday May 21 at 22 °C with 55% rain. The dry pattern of last weekend is ending; Sunday is the last warm clear day before the system settles in for the working week. Plan indoor venues from tomorrow onward.
