Full Rundown
The Sunday roda at the Pedra do Sal — the rocky outcrop at the foot of Morro da Conceição in the Saúde, recognised since 2005 as a remnant urban quilombo and a foundational site for the development of carioca urban samba in the early 20th century. The Sunday programme runs from 6 pm, free, on the cobblestone steps and the open square at Largo João da Baiana. Sunday is one of the busier nights of the week, less famous than the Monday roda but with full street-festival atmosphere: havaianas, caipirinhas, the rotating groups working samba de raiz across the open air. The terrain is uneven cobblestone — comfortable shoes, no chairs unless you bring one. The two nearest metro stations are Uruguaiana (Line 1, Av. Presidente Vargas) and Carioca (Line 1/2). Watch your phone in the dense crowd; ride-hailing for the trip back, taxis available at Largo João da Baiana — do not walk into the surrounding streets to find one.
The Lapa Sunday tradition. The Beco do Rato — the alley reference for samba in Joaquim Silva 11 — opens at 12h for almoço, the kitchen serving the house feijoada through the afternoon. Grupo Nó na Madeira leads the Sunday roda. The group’s repertoire is one of the broadest in the city: samba de raiz on one end of the spectrum, MPB on the other, with references throughout to Almir Guineto, Dona Ivone Lara, Jovelina Pérola Negra, Luiz Carlos da Vila, Adoniran Barbosa. The room is informal, family-friendly on Sunday, the tables on the sidewalk part of the experience. Closes at 21h — earlier than the Friday/Saturday 02h close. Tickets via Sympla; cash and PIX at the bar. The Beco’s accessibility infrastructure is in place. Three minutes’ walk from Carioca da Gema, five minutes from where Rio Scenarium would be on its operating days.
The Blue Note Rio’s weekly Sunday programme — the carioca outpost of the Blue Note network applies the Calçadão area to a different ritual on Sundays. Cozido & Bossa Nova runs from 12h to 17h, with free entry. The programme: a trio of musicians playing the canonical Bossa Nova repertoire across three sets through the afternoon, while the kitchen serves the cozido à portuguesa — originally from Monção in the north of Portugal, here adapted to the Brazilian palate with peito de boi, costelinha suína, linguiça, carne seca, pé suíno, plus arroz, legumes variados and pirão de caldo de carne. The chef recommends a glass of wine. R$89 prato individual / R$170 porção para duas pessoas. The Av. Atlântica setting — directly in front of Posto 3 of Copacabana beach — is the Blue Note’s outdoor calçadão area, with the show salon (2nd floor) opening at 13h on Sundays for those who want the air-conditioned interior. The programme runs every Sunday across the year.
The Sunday samba roda at Alfredinho’s 18-square-metre bar — open since 1968 on R. Almirante Gonçalves — runs from 7 pm.
The format is acoustic, the rules are strict: silence during music, finger-snap applause, self-service from the refrigerator, the bill paid on the way out. Cash, small bills only.
The Sunday roda is one of the more intimate Bip Bip nights — fewer of the festival-following weekend crowd, more of the regulars who have been coming since the bar’s first decade.
Five minutes’ walk from Blue Note Rio for those finishing the Cozido & Bossa Nova in the afternoon. The roda often runs past 9 pm — the format is “until the musicians tire” rather than fixed close.
—Note. Plan A — The Lapa Sunday lunch. Beco do Rato from 12h with feijoada and Grupo Nó na Madeira. The afternoon drift through Lavradio antiques fair (if running). Close at 21h.
—Note. Plan B — The Copacabana Sunday. Blue Note Rio Cozido & Bossa Nova 12h–17h. Walk five minutes to Bip Bip at 7 pm for the Sunday samba. Two Copacabana institutions in one Sunday — the daytime and the evening close.
—Note. Plan C — Pedra do Sal at sunset. Metro Carioca to Saúde. Roda from 6 pm. Free, outdoor, the most carioca Sunday route — combine with an early Beco lunch for the fullest day.
—Note. The combined route: Blue Note 12h–17h → Pedra do Sal 18h → Bip Bip 19h. The full Sunday samba immersion. Or Beco lunch → Pedra do Sal evening — the Lapa-to-Saúde transition.

—Note. Dark Tonight
—Note. Sunday is the gentlest night of the week and most of the city’s late venues are dark.
—Rio Scenarium. dark Sunday — the casarão runs Wed–Sat.
—Carioca da Gema. dark Sunday — Tue–Sat.
—Circo Voador. dark Sunday. Beco do Rato closes at 21h instead of running late. Pedra do Sal Sunday roda continues past 11 pm but the energy is calmer than Friday/Monday peaks. Nova Capela kitchen runs late as always — the cabrito assado after a Lapa Sunday afternoon. Tomorrow Monday: Pedra do Sal Monday roda 7 pm to midnight (the famous one — 20 years), Samba do Trabalhador with Moacyr Luz at Renascença Clube in Andaraí. Tuesday: Bip Bip choro returns. Wednesday: full Lapa back. Heads-up: the cold front continues through Monday with low temperatures and rain probability climbing. Carry an umbrella and a light jacket.

Getting Around
MetrôRio: Sunday hours 7h–23h on standard schedule (the Shakira-night extended hours ended at 7h Sunday morning). Last train around 11 pm. Cardeal Arcoverde or Siqueira Campos (Line 1) for Copacabana, Blue Note, Bip Bip. Cinelândia or Carioca for Lapa (Beco do Rato, Nova Capela). Uruguaiana or Carioca for Pedra do Sal — then 10-15 minute walk through Centro to Saúde. Av. Atlântica: vehicle access only returns at 19h tonight after the cleanup. Through the afternoon, the calçadão remains the post-show beach landscape. Cars elsewhere in Copacabana: released at 5h Sunday morning. Weather: Cool wet Sunday — 24 °C, 55 % rain. The cold front has arrived after the dry Saturday. Carry an umbrella; ride-hailing rather than walking between stops if rain is active. Ride-hailing: 99 and Uber — Sunday surge is low across the city now that the Shakira cleanup has passed. Safety: Rio de Janeiro on a Sunday evening is at its gentlest. Copacabana is well-lit and busy. Lapa is quieter than weekend nights but the Beco do Rato corner stays active until 21h close. Saúde around the Pedra: stay near the Largo João da Baiana and main lit streets, take ride-hailing rather than walking back to the metro after dark.
