Rio de Janeiro Nightlife Guide for Monday, May 18, 2026
Tonight in Rio
Monday is samba day. The week’s two anchor rodas — Pedra do Sal on the Saúde cobblestones and Samba do Trabalhador at Renascença in Andaraí — share the night, and most of the rest of the city’s casas step back so they can hold it.
The weather cooperates: 26°C, mostly cloudy, 25% chance of rain. It’s the best outdoor night of the working week. Tomorrow Tuesday brings the rain back at 65%.
If you were thinking of one of the usual spots, check before you leave. Bip Bip, Carioca da Gema, Rio Scenarium, Circo Voador, Vivo Rio and Blue Note Rio are all dark Monday. The samba addresses are where the city is tonight.
Tonight’s reduced choice. Pedra do Sal 19h–00h on the cobblestones (free, cash only). Samba do Trabalhador 17h–22h at Renascença, sit-down (Sympla ticket, doors 16h30). Beco do Rato 18h–01h in Lapa for the late option.
Pedra do Sal at 19h. The festival-density Monday on the cobblestones. Twenty years running, free entry, the canonical Monday roda. The Largo João da Baiana at the foot of Morro da Conceição fills with hundreds on the stones; music from a central mesão; vendors with cash-only beer and food. Sharp alternative: Samba do Trabalhador with Moacyr Luz at Renascença Clube in Andaraí — the polished sit-down version, ends sharp at 22h. Pick the cobblestones for the festival; pick Renascença for the polish. The wrong answer tonight is staying in.
Top Picks Tonight
Pedra do Sal — Monday Roda on the Saúde Cobblestones
The 20-year-old Monday franchise on the city’s foundational samba address. The Roda de Samba da Pedra do Sal launched in 2006 — a group of seven músicos gathering at the foot of Morro da Conceição to honour the diaspora baiana origins of the form — and has run every Monday from 19h to midnight since. Today it’s the most-cited samba night in Rio: 244K Instagram followers on the broader @pedradosaloficial account.
The format is austere. Músicos sit at a central mesão at the foot of the pedra; only the music is amplified; the cantoria is sung from the gogó; the audience occupies the cobbled escadaria and the surrounding largo with cold beer in plastic cups. The site is a Território Remanescente de Quilombo Urbano (Fundação Cultural Palmares, 2005) and tombado by IPHAN.
Vendors are cash-only — bring small bills, R$10 typically for two beer tokens. Arrive by 19h30 for any room on the escadaria; by 21h the festival is at full density.
Moacyr Luz e Samba do Trabalhador — Renascença Clube, Andaraí
The indoor sit-down counterpart to Pedra do Sal’s outdoor festival. Moacyr Luz, compositor and cantor (his songs in the Beth Carvalho, Zeca Pagodinho and Paulinho da Viola repertórios) founded Samba do Trabalhador 18 years ago for músicos who worked through the weekend and only had Monday off. It became one of the city’s most prestigious rodas — over the years Zeca Pagodinho, Leci Brandão, Roberta Sá and João Bosco have all dropped in.
Doors 16h30, music from 17h to ~22h. A mesa at the centre of a sit-down hall; a tight band led by Moacyr Luz on voz/violão with Daniel Neves (violão 7-cordas), Alexandre Nunes and Gabriel Cavalcante (voz/cavaco), Nilson Visual (surdo/tamborim), Junior de Oliveira (percussão), Mingo Silva (voz/pandeiro). The audience is multi-generational, family-oriented, less hipster than Pedra do Sal.
Sympla tickets (typically R$30–40). Metro Saens Peña plus táxi or 15-min walk; ride from Zona Sul ~R$40–50. The roda ends sharp at 22h, making it the better choice if you have an early Tuesday.
Beco do Rato — Lapa Monday Roda
The Lapa option when neither Pedra do Sal nor Andaraí works on the geography. Beco do Rato runs Monday programming from 18h to 01h — the longest Monday of the Lapa cluster (Carioca da Gema closed Mon, Rio Scenarium Wed–Sat only). The Beco is a narrow paralelepípedo passage between Joaquim Silva and Carlos Sampaio, walls covered in grafites, the casa identity built on samba reduto authenticity.
Monday programming rotates — check @becodorato for tonight’s specific roda. Sympla tickets, WhatsApp (21) 97968-3670. One-minute walk from the Lapa Arcos. The Lapa Monday option for those whose night plan doesn’t reach Saúde or Andaraí.
Suggested Routes
- Pedra MonThe festival-density Monday. Late afternoon at Museu do Amanhã or Boulevard Olímpico, ride or walk to Saúde by 19h. The roda runs 19h–00h on the cobblestones. Eat and drink from the barracas. Ride back rather than walking the side-streets after the music ends.
- RenascençaThe polished sit-down Monday. Ride to Andaraí by 16h30 doors. Music from 17h, Moacyr Luz on stage from 19h, out by 22h close. The one that ends early enough to recover for Tuesday.
- DoubleThe maximalist samba Monday. Renascença 17h–21h, ride from Andaraí to Saúde (~25 min / R$50), arrive at Pedra do Sal by 22h with the roda still in full swing for the final two hours. Both canonical Monday rodas in one night, ~R$80 in transit + Sympla ticket.
Still Going After 10 pm
After 22h: Pedra do Sal at peak density, two hours still ahead until midnight close. Samba do Trabalhador wrapping up at Renascença around 22h, the audience pouring out toward táxis. Beco do Rato in Lapa running until 01h, the Lapa late-night samba option. Nova Capela at Av. Mem de Sá 96 in Lapa — the 1903 boteco — runs late Monday kitchen for post-roda dinner; cabrito assado the house dish.
Dark Monday: Blue Note Rio (next show Thursday Mu Chebabi 20h), Bip Bip (Tuesday choro from 20h free), Carioca da Gema (next Tue 19h30/20h30), Rio Scenarium, Circo Voador, Vivo Rio. Monday is by design the samba day — the city’s other casas step back so the two rodas can hold it.
