Presidents of Argentina and Cuba reaffirm mutual objective of deepening ties and regional integration

The presidents of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, and Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, reaffirmed today, Wednesday, the mutual objective of deepening the ties between both countries and the relevance of working to achieve greater integration of Latin America and the Caribbean.

In a meeting at the San Martín Palace, the ceremonial headquarters of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, Fernández valued Cuba’s “constructive contributions and the permanent search for consensus” in the framework of the pro tempore presidency held by Argentina of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) during 2022, according to the Argentine Presidency in a press release.

Díaz-Canel arrived in Buenos Aires to participate in the VII Summit of Heads of State and Government of CELAC, held on Tuesday in the Argentine capital.

The Argentine president stressed the importance of advancing political, economic, and commercial cooperation initiatives in bilateral and multilateral relations.

He reiterated his support for the resolution presented by Cuba opposing the adoption of unilateral coercive measures by any State, considering them contrary to the United Nations Charter and international law.

In turn, Fernández expressed her gratitude for Cuba’s “firm support and unrestricted commitment in multiple areas” in support of Argentina’s legitimate rights over the Malvinas, South Georgia, South Sandwich, and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas.

On his part, Díaz-Canel praised Argentina’s traditional position against the economic blockade of the Caribbean nation and thanked President Fernández for the message he delivered in the same sense at the last General Assembly of the United Nations.

In addition, according to official information, the Cuban president valued the CELAC meeting, which he described as “a very important meeting”.

“I believe that new moments of hope are opening up for Latin America and the Caribbean”, added the president.

The meeting was attended by the Argentine Foreign Minister, Santiago Cafiero, and the Argentine Ambassador to Cuba, Luis Ilarregui, and on the Cuban side by the Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca, and the Ambassador to Argentina, Pedro Pablo Prada.
