Opinion: Lula’s Stand on G20 Agenda Ignores Elephant in the Room

(Opinion) Brazilian President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva recently assumed the G20 presidency and wants to keep geopolitics off the G20’s agenda.

Specifically, he opposes discussions on the Ukraine conflict. Lula expressed these views at a two-day summit in New Delhi.

The prior G20 statement dodged criticizing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This shows a lack of agreement among member countries.

The U.S. and some European nations wanted to condemn Russia. However, there was no consensus.

Russia’s President Putin skipped the summit, sending Foreign Minister Lavrov instead.

In an interview, Lula stated the G20 should focus on social and economic issues. He also said Russia’s Putin would be invited to the next G20 summit in Brazil.

Putin faces an international arrest warrant but will not be detained, according to Lula.

He outlined three key priorities for Brazil’s G20 agenda.

These include fighting inequality and hunger, battling climate change, and reforming international institutions.

On climate change, he warned of an “unprecedented climate emergency.”

However, the final statement from New Delhi was basic. It satisfied both fossil fuel critics and major oil producers like Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Despite its lack of ambition, the summit was called a “success.” Lula thanked Indian Prime Minister Modi for hosting a “successful” summit.

He aims to make the next meeting in Brazil at least as successful as the one in New Delhi.

Here’s my take: Lula da Silva’s call to avoid geopolitics in G20 talks seems shortsighted. The G20 is a platform for world leaders to address urgent global issues.

Ignoring the Ukraine crisis may be convenient, but it’s not responsible.

This approach risks turning the G20 into a toothless forum, unwilling to confront the world’s real challenges today.
