No Victories for Rio’s Clubs in the Brasileirão Série A

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The second round of the Série A in the 2015 season of the Brazilian national football (soccer) league, the Brasileirão, wasn’t a lucky one for the three clubs from Rio currently disputing the competition. While Fluminense lost against Atlético-MG, Flamengo and Vasco left their respective pitches with only one point.

Played in Brasília’s Mané Garrincha stadium, Fluminense lost against Atlético from Minas Gerais with 1-4. Atlético scored the first goal after only six minutes and dominated the game against the tricolor from Rio.

The second goal fell after 36 minutes, with the third and fourth goal following in the second half (after 52 and 80 minutes). In the last minutes of the game, Fred score the honor goal for Flu with a penalty kick.

Flamengo was 0-2 behind against Recife’s Sport until the 73rd minute and were lucky to at least gain a point from the game at their home ground, Rio’s Maracanã. The equalizing goal fell after Sport had to replace their injured goal keeper Magrão with field player Diego Souza, who saved the pernambucanos from losing the game in the final minute.

The match between Vasco da Gama and Figueirense ended without goals, leaving both teams still waiting for a victory in this year’s Brasileirão. However, despite the lack of goals it was an entertaining games in Florianópolis with both goal keepers standing out.

In the Série B, fourth Rio club Botafogo fared better than its fellow teams in the first league. The alvinegro won their match against CRB with 4-1 with goals from Elvis, Bill, Lulinha and Willian Arão, even though Rodrigo Pimpão was sent off in the second half.

Fogo has so far had a perfect start into the season and are currently second placed with the same amount of points as leader Sampaio Corrêa.

Next weekend Fluminense will face current leader Corinthians from São Paulo, while Flamengo will have to play against newcomer Avaí and Vasco will host Internacional. Botafogo will face Atlético-GO in the Série B.
