Ministry regulates temporary visa for digital nomads in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Aiming to stimulate activities of the so-called “digital nomads” in Brazil, the National Immigration Council, of the Ministry of Justice and Public Safety, has regulated the granting of temporary visas and residence permits to immigrants who, without employment ties in the country and using information technology, can work for foreign employers.

The measure, published this Monday (24) in the Official Gazette of the Union, establishes an initial period of residence of one year, which can be renewed for an equal period.

For the national secretary of Justice and president of the collegiate, José Vicente Santini, the regulation meets a global trend and even contributes to the tourism sector.

“The remuneration of digital nomads comes from abroad, and the resources brought by these immigrants boost the national economy. This is an important step for Brazil to promote one of the most modern work models”, he said.

The temporary visa must be requested at any Brazilian consular office abroad, with the presentation of the documents foreseen in the resolution, such as health insurance valid in national territory and proof of status as a digital nomad.

The immigrant who is already in Brazil can apply for a residence permit to the Ministry of Justice through the MigranteWeb system.

In both cases, proof of digital nomadic status must be provided through an employment or service contract, among other documents that prove a relationship with a foreign employer. In addition, it is necessary to establish means of subsistence in Brazil.

Congregating federal government entities and entities representing trade unions, employers, and the scientific and technological community, it has among its main competencies the coordination and guidance of labor immigration activities, as well as the promotion of actions aimed at attracting qualified immigrant labor to the country.
