Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday, 5 October, that “very right-wing” groups inside the US government want a change of government in Mexico. She spoke at her morning press conference at the National Palace in Mexico City.
For Americans, the charge matters because it comes from the leader of a top US trading partner, amid tense border talks. Sheinbaum stressed that she did not necessarily mean President Donald Trump himself.
She was answering a question about Brazil, where conservative Flávio Bolsonaro edged ahead of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Sunday. Brazil’s left has accused Washington of backing Bolsonaro, and the claim has not been proven.
What Sheinbaum Said
Asked whether the interference alleged in Brazil could happen in Mexico, Sheinbaum replied: “The international right does want to intervene, we have been denouncing it.” La Jornada and El Independiente reported the same words.
“It is not necessarily President Donald Trump, but there are very right-wing groups in that government that do not like Mexico,” she said. She added that those groups “seek a change of government in Mexico”.
She named no official, agency or action. Her defence, she said, was public support and spreading the benefits of the Fourth Transformation, Morena’s name for its political project.
Infobae and El País framed the warning around Mexico’s 2030 presidential election, El Independiente around the 2027 midterms. The question put to her, La Jornada reported, was whether the risk alleged in Brazil exists in Mexico; she named no specific vote.
Brazil Was the Trigger
On Brazil itself, Sheinbaum declined to judge the result. “We have to wait for the second round, and once the whole process ends we can give an opinion,” she said.
Brazil’s electoral court, the TSE, put Flávio Bolsonaro on 47.03% and Lula on 45.16%, La Jornada reported. Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, is a senator for the conservative Liberal Party (PL). Valdemar Costa Neto chairs the PL.
Lula founded the left-wing Workers’ Party (PT), and Sheinbaum called him “a very good president” on 23 September, Emeequis noted. The two meet again on 25 October, as set out in Brazil Runoff on October 25, Flávio Bolsonaro vs Lula.
Brazil’s Federal Police are examining a complaint of possible US interference, covered in Brazil Police Probe Possible US Election Interference. No finding has been published.
Asked whether Mexico would be left without allies if Lula lost, Sheinbaum said: “Our main ally is the people of Mexico.” She quoted her predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Morena’s founder: “the best foreign policy is domestic policy”, according to Emeequis.
A Recurring Theme Before the 2027 Midterms
The warning is not new. On 27 September she closed a national tour by rejecting foreign interference. That speech is covered in Mexico’s President Rejects Foreign Meddling as She Nears Two Years in Power.
Mexico’s next national vote is the June 2027 midterm, when the whole Chamber of Deputies is renewed. El Independiente tied the interference debate to that vote. Morena, chaired by Ariadna Montiel Reyes, defends large majorities built under López Obrador and Sheinbaum.
The main opposition is the conservative National Action Party (PAN), led by Jorge Romero Herrera. It stands for free markets and socially conservative values.
Romero has rejected government charges that his party invites foreign meddling, XEVT reported on 23 September. He said the PAN had arranged for a European Parliament delegation to observe the 2027 vote.
On the same Monday, Sheinbaum also pressed Washington for proof of alleged shots at the US Coast Guard. That dispute is covered in Mexico Asks US for Proof of Shots as 500 Troops Patrol.
What It Means for You
For US investors, the remarks change no rule, tariff or contract. They do add political noise while Washington and Mexico City negotiate security and trade.
For readers following US foreign policy, the charge links Mexico to a wider regional debate about Washington’s role in Latin American elections. Travel, border crossings and remittances are not affected by Monday’s statement.
What Is Not Known
Sheinbaum did not say which US officials or groups she meant. Nor did she show evidence of attempts to change Mexico’s government. Any response from Washington was not known at the time of writing.
The full official transcript of the 5 October press conference was not yet available on the government website at 2:19 p.m. ET. Quotes here are as reported by Mexican outlets.
What Prediction Markets Say
The midterm Sheinbaum’s critics and allies are already fighting over is priced on Polymarket. In “Mexico Legislative Election Winner”, bets gave Morena an 84% chance of winning the most Chamber seats in June 2027 at 3:08 p.m. ET on 5 October, little changed from earlier in the day. The PAN stood at 7%.
About US$106,000 has been traded across that event. These are bets, not polls.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
What did Sheinbaum say about US interference?
On 5 October 2026 she said “the international right does want to intervene” in Mexico. She said very right-wing groups in the US government seek a change of government, though not necessarily Donald Trump.
Why did the question come up?
Brazil held its first round on 4 October, and Brazil’s left accuses Washington of backing Flávio Bolsonaro. Reporters asked Sheinbaum whether the same risk exists in Mexico.
When is Mexico’s next election?
Mexico holds midterm elections in June 2027, renewing the whole Chamber of Deputies. The next presidential election is due in 2030, and Sheinbaum cannot run again.
