Thursday, October 15, 2026

Key Facts

  • The peso strengthened 0.43% to 18.41 per US dollar, from 18.49, as US Treasury yields fell.

  • Prediction markets: Polymarket gives 79.0% that Banxico leaves its rate unchanged in November (US$57,783 traded, read at 8:24 pm ET on 15 October). Bets, not polls.

Today’s Focus

Mexico’s main stock index, the S&P/BMV IPC, rose 1.31% to 67,663.29 points on Thursday 15 October, its highest close since 18 June. The peso strengthened 0.43% to 18.41 per US dollar.

Banco Base analyst Gabriela Siller attributed the gains to a fall in US Treasury bond yields, which lifted markets worldwide. In Mexico the rally was led by Grupo Carso, up 8.71%, and the cement maker Cemex, up 5.1%.

US investors can follow the move through the EWW fund, which rose 1.62% to US$73.88. Cemex’s New York shares rose 5.67% to US$10.06.

What matters today. A stronger peso and a rising index together make Thursday a good day for dollar-based holders of Mexican shares, though the move reversed only part of recent weakness.

iShares MSCI Mexico ETF (EWW) daily chart

01 The session in one read

The IPC climbed 873 points from Wednesday’s close of 66,790.35. It was the fifth gain in the last six sessions and the highest close since 18 June, when the index stood at 68,265.11.

The gain was broad but not universal. Of 789 companies traded, 461 rose, 308 fell and 20 were unchanged, according to Infobae’s report of the daily market summary.

The index is up 5.22% so far in 2026 and 5.37% in October alone.

Assessment — A yield-driven rally MEDIUM

The gain came on a global day of lower Treasury yields, and Mexican shares have been rising for most of the past six sessions. That fits a market-wide move rather than a Mexico-specific catalyst.

Whether the gain lasts depends on US yields, which can reverse quickly.

03 Why it moved: lower US yields

Siller said capital markets closed with broad gains worldwide as Treasury yields fell. The TLT Treasury bond fund rose 1.37% on the day, which is consistent with lower yields.

Lower yields make riskier assets and emerging-market currencies more attractive. The UUP dollar fund fell 0.41%, which helped the peso.

05 The regional scoreboard

Mexico was the best of the five main Latin American markets on the day. Argentina’s Merval rose 0.69%, Chile’s IPSA 0.05%, Colombia’s COLCAP edged down and Brazil’s Ibovespa fell 1.06%.

The ILF fund, which tracks large Latin American companies, fell 0.83%.

06 The outlook

The next test is whether the index can hold above 67,000 if US yields stop falling. The October rise of 5.37% leaves less room for another gain of the same size.

The central bank’s next decision is the main domestic event ahead. Polymarket traders expect no change in November.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket, a prediction market, priced a Banxico decision in November at 79.0% for no change, 16.5% for a 25-basis-point cut and 2.9% for a 25-basis-point increase, with US$57,783 traded (read at 8:24 pm ET on 15 October). These prices are bets, not polls, and they can move quickly on new data.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

07 What to watch

  • US yields: A reversal in Treasury yields would test Thursday’s gain in the IPC and the peso.
  • The peso: Watch whether USD/MXN stays near 18.40 after the 18.50 area earlier in the week.
  • Earnings season: Company results in the coming weeks will test the strong move in Carso and Cemex.
  • US data: US industrial production for September is due at 13:15 UTC on Friday 16 October.
