Lula’s Brazil Acquires Israeli Defense Tech Despite Criticism Over Gaza Conflict

In a strategic upgrade of its military capabilities, the Brazilian Army has embarked on a landmark defense project by adopting the Israeli Atmos BR system for its 155mm wheeled howitzers.

Announced by the Logistics Command’s Head of Material, this decision is a key element of Brazil’s Strategic Armored Forces Program.

Lula’s approach to Israel remains notably pragmatic, despite his harsh criticisms of the Gaza conflict, where he has used terms like ‘genocide’.

This contrasts sharply with his ally, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who created a significant stir on social media by announcing a halt to all military transactions with Israel.

The system, a 155/52 howitzer on a Tatra T-815 6×6 chassis by Elbit Systems, meets all Army operational requirements.

The contract’s initial phase requires Elbit Systems to supply two prototype units within 12 months.

These will undergo rigorous testing at the Army’s Evaluation and Armored Training Centers.

Upon successful validation, the deal will extend to include 34 additional units, scheduled for staggered delivery by 2034.

This procurement will enhance the artillery’s range, accuracy, and mobility, significantly modernizing Brazil’s military assets.

Playing a crucial role in this transition is Ares Aerospace and Defense.

Under commercial director Frederico Medella, the company will manage the reception, delivery, and maintenance of the new howitzers.

Ares, Elbit Land’s operational wing in Brazil, has boosted its manufacturing and research capabilities for this project.

The Atmos BR system supports all NATO-standard ammunition, along with specialized munitions such as

  • M454 (Super HE),
  • M401 (HE-ER-BB), and
  • M481 (HE-ER-BT),

ensuring compatibility and versatility in operations.

Its integration will adjust military doctrines and foster shared experiences among international users.

Expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2025, these new units symbolize a robust, modern, and reliable upgrade.

This project strengthens Brazil’s defense infrastructure and promises to boost local engineering and manufacturing sectors.
