Jeanine Áñez was transferred to another prison: “They took me out saying I was going to the clinic”.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The former interim president of Bolivia Jeanine Áñez was transferred early Saturday morning from Obrajes prison to Miraflores prison. “They took me out telling me that I was going to the South clinic,” reported a local newspaper, which also shared images of the former president upon her arrival at the Miraflores prison.

The authorities did not explain this transfer between prisons, which comes after a court in La Paz requested on Friday afternoon that Áñez be transferred to a health clinic due to her state of health, but this request was revoked by the Attorney General’s Office hours later.

She left the Obrajes Women’s Guidance Center at 1:10 a.m. and was loaded into a van, while some people who were keeping vigil expressed their support for her: “Strength Jeanine, we are with you”.

About 15 minutes later she entered the Miraflores prison. “They took me out telling me that I was going to the South clinic”, the former head of state said before entering the prison.

The Bolivian Attorney General’s Office paralyzed the decision of a court in La Paz to transfer this Friday the former president to a health clinic to be treated for her hypertension.

The court had made the decision following an action for release filed by her defense, however, the Bolivian Attorney General’s Office has appealed this decision and has requested that the medical evaluation of Áñez be arranged by personnel from the Institute of Forensic Investigations (IDIF), under the Attorney General’s Office, or specialist doctors from a public hospital transferred to the prison to evaluate her health.

“In attention to the report of the Director of the COF of Obrajes on the date and the medical reports attached to it, it is ordered that personnel of the IDIF Specialized and/or specialized medical personnel of a public hospital be sent to the COF of Obrajes to verify the state of health of the accused,” states the judicial resolution and “leaves without effect the judicial exit order,” according to La Razón.

Áñez was confined to bed due to a decompensation caused by hypertension. Prison authorities had assured that the former president’s health was “stable”, so they had rejected the request to transfer her to a medical center.

Áñez’s daughter, Carolina Ribera, has described this new resolution as “ridiculous” and has said that it is an abuse that has no limits. “It seems to me that they want to see my mother dead, they have no will for anything, I brought a cardiologist, but they won’t let him in either. I am very indignant and I know that my mother has another crisis,” Ribera denounced, according to El Deber.
