What Ironman Cozumel Is

Ironman is the brand behind the classic long-distance triathlon, which strings swimming, cycling and running into one race. A full Ironman covers 140.6 miles in a single day.

Cozumel is an island about 30 minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen, on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. The organiser notes more than 14 miles of reefs, plus Maya ruins and a national park.

The organiser calls Cozumel a seasoned Ironman host city and a late-season race in paradise. In 2026 it carries the Latin American Championship title, which the race page says will draw top regional athletes.

For US triathletes, Ironman Cozumel offers a warm, flat course late in the year. In November the island also shares the US East Coast clock, so travellers from New York or Miami face no time change.

The Ironman Cozumel Course

The organiser says the Ironman Cozumel swim takes place in the protected Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park, with clear water and rich underwater life. The 2.4-mile swim runs from the Cozumel ASIPONA Marina to Chankanaab Park, in water the organiser puts at 78°F (26°C) on average.

The bike leg covers three laps around the island for 180 kilometres, or 112 miles. The route runs along ocean roads, through the hotel zone and briefly through town.

The marathon is flat and passes the waterfront walk, the main plaza and older neighbourhoods of San Miguel de Cozumel. The finish line sits in the municipal park by City Hall, in the centre of town.

The organiser’s weather table shows highs of 81°F to 86°F (27°C to 30°C) for the 2023 to 2025 editions. It rates both the bike and the run course as flat.

Race Week Schedule in Local and US Eastern Time

Quintana Roo, the state that includes Cozumel, keeps the same time as US Eastern Standard Time all year. Once US clocks fall back on 1 November, every race time below is identical in New York.

Athlete check-in and the race expo open on Thursday 19 November, from noon to 8 p.m., at the Cozumel Convention Center. On Friday 20 November check-in runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in designated time slots, the last chance to collect race packets.

English briefings at the Presidente Hotel are on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. local time. Mandatory bike check-in at Chankanaab Park, the first transition area, runs on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

On Sunday the professional men start at 6:55 a.m. and the professional women at 7 a.m. local time. Age-group athletes follow in a rolling start from 7:10 a.m., and the awards are on Monday 23 November at 11 a.m. local time.

How to Enter Ironman Cozumel

Ironman Cozumel entries are sold only through the organiser’s registration page, which showed registration as open on 13 October. The general entry costs US$799.24, made up of US$729 for the race and US$70.24 in processing fees.

The organiser warns that pricing depends on remaining slots and rises automatically when a tier fills. Entries are personal, cannot be transferred to another athlete and are not refundable.

The entry includes a backpack, a finisher medal, on-course food and drink, medical support and a timing chip. Bibs are personalised with name and flag only for athletes registered at least one month before race day.

Age-group athletes can also earn a place at the 2027 Ironman World Championship here. Qualifiers must claim the slot in person at Monday’s ceremony, with photo ID and payment.

How to Follow the Race From the US

No television or streaming broadcast of Ironman Cozumel has been announced for US viewers. The organiser says race day will have live coverage with athlete tracking and running results.

Friends and family can follow any Ironman Cozumel athlete in the IRONMAN Tracker app, which the organiser lists for live tracking and results. The organiser also points fans to its @IRONMANLive account on X for the professional race.

Getting to Cozumel

Visitors can fly directly to Cozumel International Airport, the organiser’s travel page says. The island’s airport is being expanded, as described in our report on the Cozumel airport works.

The other route is to fly into Cancún, take an authorised taxi or an ADO intercity bus to Playa del Carmen, then the ferry. The organiser puts the crossing at about 30 minutes, with boats from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. that can change with the weather.

Athletes flying with a bike should check airline and ferry rules for bike boxes before booking. Ten official host hotels offer free bike support and race-morning shuttles for their validated guests.

Mexico’s other big late-season race for US fans is off-road, and our Baja 1000 guide covers that one. The Baja 1000 starts in Los Cabos on 13 November, nine days before the Cozumel triathlon.

Safety and Costs for Visitors

The US State Department rates Quintana Roo at Level 2, exercise increased caution, because of crime and the risk of terrorism. It notes that US citizens have been victims of crime in tourist areas.

The advice is to stay in well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones and to watch surroundings after dark. The organiser separately asks athletes and supporters to agree before the race on a meeting point for after the finish.

Spectators are not allowed into the finish area because of crowding, the organiser says. The swim start is also closed to spectators, while the organiser says hundreds of people line the downtown run course.

Beyond the entry fee, an Ironman Cozumel trip means flights, bike transport and lodging from Thursday check-in to the Monday awards. The organiser does not set these costs, so prices depend on travel dates and hotels.

What Is Not Confirmed Yet

The organiser has not published the Ironman Cozumel 2026 start list, the number of entrants or the names of professional athletes. The full course overview is still marked as coming soon, and the venue map online dates from the 2025 race.

The schedule sets the overall finish cut-off at 17 hours, but separate swim and bike cut-off times are not listed on the race pages. The organiser also warns that sea conditions can shift start times and that the schedule may change.
