Florianópolis has quietly become one of the world’s hottest bases for digital nomads — but the island’s popularity is starting to come with a price tag that surprises newcomers. The boom is real; so is the bill.

For anyone weighing “Floripa” as a landing spot, the honest picture is a beautiful, safe, well-connected island that is no longer the budget option it once was.

The Florianópolis nomad boom

A 2026 ranking of the fastest-growing remote-work destinations placed Florianópolis seventh in the world, with check-ins up about 96% — the only city in southern Brazil to make the global top ten. The draw is easy to see: clean beaches, a reputation as one of Brazil’s safest cities, a growing tech scene, and an established community of foreign residents that makes landing soft.

Estimates put around 30,000 foreigners on the island, swelling with nomads in the warmer months.

The bill

The flip side is cost. Local reporting has flagged Florianópolis with the most expensive municipal bus fare in Brazil and one of the country’s priciest grocery baskets, while rents average roughly US$11.50 per square metre.

Put together, a single person living comfortably should budget on the order of US$1,150 a month — modest by North American or European standards, but well above what many expect from a Brazilian island, and a real squeeze for locals whose wages have not kept pace.

Where to land

Most nomads settle around Lagoa da Conceição, a lagoon-side neighbourhood with cafés, coworking and nightlife, or Campeche on the south of the island, which is quieter and beachy. Both put you near good surf and a ready-made community, but they are also where prices have climbed fastest.

If budget is tight, look slightly inland or toward the mainland side of the city, and be realistic that the most desirable spots now command near-international rents.

The bigger question for Floripa is the same one facing every boom town: whether the influx prices out the locals who give the place its character. For now, it remains one of Brazil’s most comfortable nomad bases — provided you arrive with the right budget in mind.
