Costa Rica registers the highest number of homicides during 2022

Costa Rica reached the highest number of homicides in its history in 2022 with a total of 656, according to data released today by the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ).

The previous year it exceeded the number of murders reported in 2021 by 68, while it exceeded the total of 2017 (603) by 53 deaths, which until now remained the year with the most homicides.

According to the authorities, the main reason for these deaths was the settling of scores between criminal organizations (407), followed by arguments (113), cases related to other crimes (55) and domestic violence (22).

Of the total number of murders, 472 were killed with a firearm, 106 with a knife, and 78 by other methods.
