Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to come to Brazil in April

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, will come to Brazil in the second half of April. The visit was agreed on Wednesday (28) during a meeting between Lavrov and Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, moments before the opening of the G20 foreign ministers meeting.

According to Itamaraty, the two foreign ministers talked about the bilateral agenda and the current situation and prospects of the war in Ukraine.

The Russian Minister will make a working visit to Brazil, and the expectation is that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will gain space in the talks with Brazilian authorities.

Last week, the Russian government informed it is analyzing a plan proposed by Lula to try to mediate peace in Ukraine.

The war completed one year last week.

On the other hand, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said he wants to meet with Lula and needs the Brazilian’s help so that “Ukraine is better understood in Latin America.

The Ukrainian leader said he plans a summit meeting with regional presidents.

Nevertheless, Lula is opposed to sending weapons, ammunition, or other war technology to Zelensky’s government.

The conversation between Lavrov and Vieira lasted about 45 minutes.

According to an interlocutor of the Brazilian government, the possibility of Brazil mediating a negotiation for a peace plan should be raised in discussions with the foreign ministers in New Delhi this week.

Last week, while participating in the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Vieira stated that Brazil prefers to talk about peace instead of participating in a war.

And he reaffirmed that the Brazilian government would not send weapons to Ukraine, as the Western powers wanted.
