Bolivia Discovers Major Gas and Oil Reserve

In a recent reveal, Bolivian President Luis Arce announced the discovery of the Mayaya Centro X1 gas and oil field in La Paz.

This discovery elevates Bolivia as a major regional fuel exporter, placing La Paz as the third-largest hydrocarbon producer with 1.7 trillion cubic centimeters of natural gas.

The announcement came during a historical event, marking the most significant discovery since 2005.

Arce highlighted the northern sub-Andean basin’s potential, spanning La Paz, Pando, and Beni, which could contain up to 17 trillion cubic centimeters of reserves.

Preliminary exploration started in November 2022 with a $50 million investment, reaching depths of 6,000 meters.

This project contrasts with previous attempts that, despite a $500 million investment, failed to find viable resources.

YPFB has begun drilling at three additional sites and is building a pipeline for daily outputs of 10 million cubic meters of gas and 1,000 barrels of oil.
