Fueling Growth: Petrobras’s Big Bet on Bolivian Gas for Brazilian Markets

Petrobras is stepping up natural gas production in Bolivia, focusing on the demands of Brazilian industries for affordable fuel.

During a forum in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Magda Chambriard, Petrobras’s president, outlined this expansion.

In 2014, production soared to 60 million cubic meters daily. Today, it maintains a steady flow of 35 million, with Petrobras overseeing a quarter of this volume.

In collaboration with Bolivia’s YPFB, Petrobras aims to increase reserves substantially.

Target areas in Tarija could yield an additional 4.88 trillion cubic feet of gas and over 100 million barrels of liquid resources.

This initiative reaffirms Tarija’s role as a key energy hub, promising a more reliable gas supply for Brazil.

These efforts also support Brazilian industries critical to agriculture, such as fertilizer and petrochemical production, which have suffered from high domestic gas costs.

As Brazil relies heavily on imported fertilizers, securing a steady, cost-effective gas supply is vital.

Petrobras is not just planning; it is investing deeply. With $10 billion invested in Bolivia since 2002, the company is a major player in the regional energy market.

It now controls four areas in Bolivia and is eyeing further exploration in the San Telmo Norte region by 2025, pending environmental approval.
