ArtRio International Fair Returns to Rio this Wednesday

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This Wednesday, September 13th, the seventh edition of the ArtRio Fair opens in Marina da Gloria. Considered one of the most important international visual arts fair in Brazil, the event will gather 73 Brazilian and foreign galleries until this Sunday, September 17th.

Besides painting and sculpture, the fair will also showcase video-art works under the direction of American curator Kelly Taxter.

The video-art section will bring approximately 20 works that reflect on the contemporary pop culture’s freedom in regards to the cultural diversity in the world.

“This ArtRio’s edition will definitely be different from the others. It expects to present a consistent, mature fair that suits the demands of this sector”, informs Brenda Valansi, ArtRio’s president.

Even though the Art Rio‘s official line up starts on Wednesday, September 13th, diverse parallel events are already happening since yesterday, September 11th, like the Circuito Integrado de Galerias de Arte (Art Galleries Integrated Circuit), in which, until this Tuesday’s evening, the most important galleries in Rio promote debates and vernisages with participant artists from ArtRio.

For the fifth year, ArtRio is promoting the FOCO Bradesco ArtRio Award, which recognizes young Brazilian artists and aims to stimulate their artistic development. The winners are awarded with a residence experience in a Brazilian or international art venue and are also invited to exhibit in the fair.

“Our idea is to enhance visual arts at the same time we democratize the knowledge about it. The ArtRio platform is present in the entire arts’ circle, from the creation to the acknowledgement. We are interested in arts that are also in contact with the public space and the daily life”, says Luiz Calainho, ArtRio’s partner.

What’s more, diverse parallel attractions will take place in Rio’s most traditional museums and cultural centers. At Oi Futuro Flamengo, in Flamengo, artists Daniel Arsham and Makoto Azuma will be exhibiting in the expose “Outras Ideias” (Other Ideas). There, the audience will have the opportunity to take a guided tour with curator Marcello Dantas.

Candido Portinari’s restored work “Bodas de Cana”, being exhibited at Musem of Modern Art (MAM), in Aterro do Flamengo, is worth the guided visitation with curator Fernando Cocchiarale. In Lagoa, the Eva Klabin Foundation will be opening the exhibit “Flutuações | Bispo do Rosário”, followed by a cocktail and a guided visitation with curator Marcio Doctors.

In Centro, the German exhibition “Weltreise” will be inaugurated at the Paço Imperial museum. With curatorship of Mathias Flugge, the expose will showcase over 300 works from German artists. Also in Centro, a cycle of debates promoted by the Architects and Designers Encounter group will take place at Museu do Amanha, in Praça Maua, with participants like Arthur Casas, Carlos Mota and Claudia Moreira Salles.

“ArtRio tries to make the visual arts’ business in Brazil meet the international standards’ demands. We want the Brazilian arts market to be globally recognized as fair, transparent and based in ethical principles of respect to the art”, completes Valansi.
