Cine Joia Screens Rare French Films Until this Wednesday in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – From August 31st to this Wednesday, September 13th, the Cine Joia movie theater, in Copacabana, hosts the “Mostra Raridades do Cinema Francês” (Rarities of French Cinema Exhibit). The first edition of the event brings eight independent French movies released in the last six years.

Varying from comedy to drama, all of the exhibited productions have been directed by French filmmakers, and most of them have never been seen by the Brazilian audience.

This Monday, September 11th, Cine Joia showcases “Tempête” (Storm), at 1:30 PM, “Outsider”, at 3:30 PM, and “Crache Coeur” (Thorned Heart), at 5:30 PM.

Released last year, “Tempête” portrays the story of Dom, a 36 year-old sailor whose daughter and son decide to live after his divorce. Directed by Samuel Collardey, the plot evolves around the challenges of Dom’s relationship with his family when his daughter gets pregnant.

In “Outsider”, filmmaker Christophe Barratier depicts one of the greatest international frauds of all times. Based in real facts, the 2017 movie shows how a young small businessman became one of the main authors of 2008’s financial crisis by participating in the French institution Societe Generale’s corruption scandal.

Directed by Julia Kowalski, “Crache Coeur” (Thorned Heart) tells the story of Jozef, a Polish worker who goes to France in the search of his son, who he abandoned fifteen years before, with the help of his boss’ daughter.

One of the exhibit’s highlights, “Corniche Kennedy” (2016) will be screened this Tuesday, September 12th, at 6:30 PM. Directed by Dominique Cabrera, the film portrays youngsters in the French Mediterranean who defy the gravity law by taking risks.

Sasha Wolff’s “Mercenaire” (Mercenary, 2015) and Caroline Champetier’s “Berthe Morisot” (2012) will also be displayed on Tuesday, at 4:30 PM and 2:30 PM, respectively. The first film brings the story of a Welsh young man who, in order to become a rugby player, has to face several challenges.

In “Berthe Morisot”, the namesake protagonist fights against her family to pursue the dream of living for painting. The plot consists in the story of the first female professional impressionist painter.

The festival closes on Wednesday, September 13th, with two promising productions: “La Loi de la Jungle” (The Jungle’s Law, 2016), to be exhibited at 2:30 PM, and “Le Fils de Jean” (Jean’s Son, 2016), at 4:30 PM. In Antonin Peratjatko’s comedy “The Jungle’s Law”, the intern Marc Chataigne gets lost in the Amazon Forest when he goes to the French Guiana to inaugurate the first ski station in the region.

Located in the heart of Copacabana, Cine Joia is an underground vintage movie room from the early 1950s. One of the only surviving street movie theaters in Rio, the venue is today an important spot for the alternative cinema, promoting diverse festivals and workshops. The “Mostra Raridades do Cinema Francês” (Rarities of French Cinema Exhibit) is promoted in partnership with the François Institute and France’s Consulate.
