Argentine presidential candidates and leaders sign commitment to combat disinformation

Presidential pre-candidates and political leaders in Argentina have signed a commitment to combat disinformation in social networks and digital media ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The National Electoral Chamber (CNE) organized the event in Buenos Aires, where the “Digital Ethical Commitment 2023” was signed.

The initiative aims to address the challenges of disinformation during the electoral process and counter false information on digital platforms.

Notable pre-candidates in attendance included Patricia Bullrich, Guillermo Moreno, Santiago Cúneo, and César Biondini.

Paula Abal Medina signed on behalf of the ruling party Unión por la Patria. The commitment emphasizes honest democratic debates and limits defamation and false content.

The signing ceremony was attended by prominent figures from the Supreme Court of Justice, CNE, and other electoral authorities.

The document highlights the importance of upholding the integrity of the electoral process and countering disinformation’s negative impact.

Representatives from digital platforms and journalism organizations also participated in the event. Nineteen presidential formulas have been registered for the upcoming Primary, Open, Simultaneous, and Compulsory Elections (PASO) in August.

The PASO will determine the candidates for the presidential elections in October.

The general elections in October will also include the election of parliamentarians, national senators, and national deputies.

To win the presidency in October, a candidate must secure 45 percent of the votes or at least 40 percent with a 10 percentage point difference.

If a runoff election is needed, it will take place in November, with the two leading candidates competing.
