Argentina’s YPF Consolidates Domestic Hold on the Country’s Oil Treasures by Buying Out TotalEnergies

Argentina’s state-owned oil company, YPF, just bought a major 45% stake in two valuable shale oil fields—Rincón La Ceniza and La Escalonada—from France’s TotalEnergies for $500 million.

These fields sit in Vaca Muerta, one of the world’s largest shale oil and gas basins. Shell holds an equal 45% share, while Neuquén province’s oil firm owns 10%.

Vaca Muerta is the heart of Argentina’s energy hopes. In the last year, oil production from the area jumped 26%, now topping 447,000 barrels a day.

YPF accounts for over half of that oil, and its current development plan aims for nearly 200,000 barrels daily from its own wells by the end of this year.

This deal reflects a shift in how companies see Argentina. TotalEnergies is moving resources to more profitable projects, especially offshore gas, and adjusting to Argentina’s new business landscape.

At the same time, YPF’s purchase means more local control. The company gains fracking rights until 2051 over 51,000 acres—an investment for the long run.

Argentina’s Energy Gamble

To unlock even more oil exports, Argentina is building a key new pipeline. By 2027, it will let the country nearly triple export capacity from Vaca Muerta, aiming for $30 billion a year in energy exports by 2030.

Recent policy changes and a steadier currency have also helped attract $15.5 billion in new energy investments. The real story, though, is about Argentina trying to become less dependent on outside firms.

As some global companies step back, YPF and others step forward despite the risks of Argentina’s unsettled economy and the challenge of finishing big projects on time.

For Argentina, this deal represents a push for greater energy independence and a shot to earn much-needed foreign cash by selling more oil and gas abroad.

If things go as planned, YPF’s bigger role could help move the country closer to economic stability and a stronger position in global energy markets.
