After A Record High, Mexico’s Peso Meets A Stock-Market Reality Check

Mexico’s peso is starting Friday stronger, but the backdrop is not just local. Around 08:03 UTC, USD/MXN hovered near 17.65, close to the 17.655 level on TradingView, after Thursday’s move from about 17.81 to roughly 17.65, a 0.92% gain for the peso.

The currency’s resilience still rests on policy discipline. Banxico’s policy rate is 7.00%, and December inflation eased to 3.69% year over year, leaving room to cut cautiously rather than chase the cycle.

Banxico’s FIX reference rate for Friday is 17.6897 per dollar. Monex said the peso finished Thursday up 0.75%, trading between 17.61 and 17.83, and framed 17.60–17.72 as the near-term corridor.

The charts underline how fast the move has been. On both the 4-hour and daily views, RSI sits in oversold territory and MACD remains negative. That can trigger sharp bounces, but it usually signals “extended” more than “reversed.”

A recovery above 17.72–17.73 would ease pressure; a clean break under 17.60 would point to a fresh leg lower in USD/MXN. Mexico’s equity tape, meanwhile, cooled.

The S&P/BMV IPC slipped 1.12% to 66,649.28, with 272 million shares traded for 23.851 billion pesos (about $1.352 billion). Banco Base’s Gabriela Siller highlighted losses led by Femsa (-3.75%), América Móvil (-3.67%), Pinfra (-2.92%), GAP (-2.66%) and Cemex (-2.46%).

On the upside, Pinfra L (+5.97%), Grupo Ara (+4.21%) and Aeroméxico (+3.82%) stood out, with Megacable and Orbia also cited among the better performers.

Cross-border gauges stayed active. The iShares MSCI Mexico ETF (EWW) showed a $73.21 NAV, about 1.26 million shares traded Thursday, and flow snapshots of about -$21 million over the past month but about +$7 million year-to-date.

Globally, Wall Street finished higher, while WTI fell 4.42% to $59.28 and Brent slid 4.10% to $63.78 after geopolitical tone cooled. The signal for investors is simple: Mexico’s credibility supports the peso, but price still punishes any hint of heavy-handed interference.
