Two West Virginia National Guard soldiers on a routine patrol were gunned down just blocks from the White House, in an ambush that has turned a downtown Washington corner into the latest flashpoint in America’s arguments over borders and policing.

The attack unfolded around 2:15 p.m. near Farragut Square, a busy park of office workers and tourists. Witnesses reported two sharp bangs, people running, and apparent Secret Service agents sprinting after a man in a hooded sweatshirt.

Authorities say the suspected gunman is 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who entered the United States in 2021 under the emergency airlift from Kabul and secured asylum earlier this year.

Investigators believe he acted alone. The FBI and a federal terrorism task force are now combing through his digital trail and contacts to determine whether ideology, mental health or personal grievance drove the attack.
