Chile’s Peso Surge And Record IPSA Rally Signal Market’s Bet On Stability
Chile’s markets are sending a clear message: investors are rewarding hard assets and a return to predictable policy.
Copper is trading above $5 a pound, the dollar index has slipped toward 99.5, and by Thursday morning the peso had pushed USD/CLP into the 925–927 band, its strongest level since March.
At the same time, the S&P IPSA closed Wednesday at 9,998 points after briefly crossing the 10,000 mark for the first time, leaving the benchmark close to 49% higher for 2025.
The currency move blends global winds with local fundamentals. A softer greenback and tightening copper supply favour commodity exporters just as Chile still offers a rate premium, with its policy rate at 4.75% against a US corridor near 3.75–4.0%.
The central bank’s latest business-perceptions survey points to slightly better activity, helping to sustain inflows into peso assets.

On the four-hour chart, USD/CLP trades below its short-term moving averages and under the Ichimoku cloud, while the daily MACD stays negative and RSI sits in the high 30s, signalling a persistent but now stretched bearish trend for the dollar.
Equities are telling the same story in brighter colours. The IPSA’s sprint to five digits came with broad participation: AFP Habitat, Schwager, Aguas Andinas, Colbún and Entel stood out among the top winners.
On the other side of the tape, AFP Cuprum, Socovesa, Paz Corp, Hites and Ripley led the day’s losers as investors rotated away from weaker balance sheets and more speculative retailers.

Turnover was dominated by Latam Airlines, SQM and CMPC, while the New York–listed iShares MSCI Chile ETF is now up just over 50% in dollars this year, underscoring how foreign money has returned after several cautious years.
Weekly charts show the IPSA pressing the upper Bollinger band with RSI near 80, a classic overbought signal even as momentum remains positive.
Politics sits just beneath the tape. After years of constitutional experiments and stop-start regulation, markets are clearly leaning toward the more orthodox, market-friendly agenda signalled by the right-of-centre presidential frontrunner.
With the IPSA overbought and USD/CLP already near the bottom of its 910–950 range, both markets may pause for breath.
If the Fed cuts again and Chile opts for stability in December, traders see room for the peso to test the low-910s and for the IPSA to push decisively beyond 10,500; a surprise in Washington or at the ballot box would quickly challenge that narrative.
