Uruguay’s Tourism Boom: Record Visitor Numbers in Early 2025

Uruguay’s Ministry of Tourism reported a record-breaking influx of 572,699 tourists in January 2025, marking a 10.45% increase in visitor spending compared to January 2024.

The country experienced unprecedented travel activity as Carrasco International Airport processed 206,000 passengers, setting a new monthly record. Argentine tourists led this surge, with 309,570 visitors arriving between December 20, 2024, and January 13, 2025 alone.

Several factors contributed to this growth, including Argentina’s improving economy and the elimination of their “country tax” on foreign transactions. Brazilian visitor numbers declined slightly due to exchange rate challenges.

Cruise tourism flourished simultaneously with more than 190 ships docking at Montevideo and Punta del Este ports. The eastern coastal resorts attracted significant interest, driving accommodation prices upward.

Monthly rates for luxury Punta del Este apartments reached $20,000, while more affordable options started at $100 daily in Canelones. Tourism officials expect the total 2025 summer season to surpass 2024’s impressive figures of 1.13 million visitors and $711 million in revenue.

In addition, this continues the robust recovery trend from previous years. Uruguay hosted 3.8 million international tourists in 2023, generating approximately $1.7 billion in economic impact.

Uruguay’s Tourism Surge

The government actively supports tourism growth through strategic incentives. Current VAT exemptions for foreigners on gastronomy, car rentals, and hotel accommodations extend through April 2025.

These measures have strengthened Uruguay’s appeal as a regional destination. Marina Cantera, President of Uruguay’s Chamber of Tourism, attributes this success to favorable economic conditions.

The U.S. dollar appreciated nearly 13% against the Uruguayan peso in 2024, creating advantageous conditions for international travelers. Tourism remains vital to Uruguay’s economy, supporting multiple sectors throughout the country of 3.4 million people.

This record-setting January indicates Uruguay’s tourism industry has fully rebounded from pandemic disruptions and established new growth benchmarks for the future.
