The president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, criticized the recent statements of the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, regarding Venezuela.

On Monday 29, President Lula said there are many “narratives” about human rights violations by President Nicolás Maduro.

“I was surprised when it was said that what happened in Venezuela is a narrative,” Lacalle Pou said Tuesday 30.

“You know what we think about Venezuela, about the government of Venezuela.”

The Uruguayan president did not directly quote President Lula but directly referenced his speech.

Yesterday, Lula stated: “Maduro knows the narrative they have built against Venezuela for so long. Celso Amorim [special advisor for International Affairs of the Presidency] went around the world explaining that it wasn’t how people said it was.”

OTHER CRITICISMS FROM THE PRESIDENT OF URUGUAY

This is not the first time Lacalle Pou criticizes dictatorships in Latin America.

On the opposite of Lula, who suggests distancing Brazil from Europe, the president of Uruguay said that the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) should be “modern, flexible and open to the world.”

“We know that Brazil has an important economic and demographic weight; I have no problem admitting that,” Lacalle Pou noted.

“Uruguay will advance in negotiations with China, as it has done so far. Brazil can, in parallel, make its way.”

“After that, we will share everything that has been negotiated.”

“To sum it up: the Mercosur we want needs to be a modern Mercosur, flexible and open to the world.”
