Uruguay’s manufacturing industry output grew by an average of 3.6 percent in 2022 versus 2021, driven by food processing, the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported yesterday, Monday.

Last year, the division with the highest positive incidence of the Manufacturing Industry Physical Volume Index (IVFIM) was Food Products, with an advance of 7.0 percent and a weight of 2.8 percentage points.

It was followed in importance by Motor Vehicles and Wood Production and Products, with increases of 103 and 17 percent, respectively, and shares of 2 and 0.3 percentage points.

On the other hand, the divisions with the highest negative impact were Pharmaceutical Products and Paper and Paper Products”, with respective variations of -7.8 and -4.2 percent and impacts of -0.5 percentage points in both cases.

The IVFIM recorded a year-on-year increase of 1.1 percent last December.

In 2021, industrial production expanded by 12.3 percent, a figure in which beef processing had a significant influence.

The government of President Luis Lacalle Pou expects the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to have grown by 4.80 percent in 2022, a result that will be officially announced next March.
