TSMC’s Chip Dominance Grows: Record Profits Fuel A.I. Revolution

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has posted exceptional financial results for the third quarter of 2024. The world’s largest contract chipmaker reported a 54% increase in net profit compared to the same period last year.

This surge brought TSMC’s earnings to NT$325.26 billion ($10.1 billion), surpassing market expectations. The company’s revenue also saw significant growth, reaching NT$759.69 billion ($23.5 billion).

This figure represents a 36% increase from the previous year. TSMC’s gross margin climbed to 57.8%, exceeding the company’s own guidance of 55.5%.

These impressive results stem from strong demand in two key areas: smartphones and artificial intelligence (AI). TSMC’s advanced chip manufacturing technologies have positioned the company at the forefront of the AI revolution.

Major tech giants like Apple and Nvidia rely on TSMC for their cutting-edge chips. The company’s success has prompted an upward revision of its full-year projections.

TSMC now expects its 2024 revenue to grow by approximately 30% in U.S. dollar terms. This forecast surpasses their previous estimate of slightly above 20% growth.

For the fourth quarter of 2024, TSMC projects revenue between $26.1 billion and $26.9 billion. This range indicates a 13% sequential increase or a 35% year-over-year growth.

TSMC’s Growth and Market Leadership

The company also anticipates its capital expenditure for 2024 to exceed $30 billion slightly. TSMC’s CEO, C.C. Wei, expressed confidence in the company’s future.

He stated that the current demand is genuine and likely represents just the beginning of a larger trend. Wei emphasized TSMC’s broad growth across the industry and its collaborations with nearly all AI innovators.

The chipmaker’s strong performance has alleviated concerns about global chip demand and the sustainability of the AI boom. These worries had intensified earlier in the week when ASML Holding, a key equipment supplier, provided lower-than-expected sales guidance.

TSMC’s success story extends beyond its financial results. The company’s market capitalization briefly crossed the $1 trillion mark in July 2024, highlighting its significance in the global tech ecosystem.

This milestone underscores TSMC’s crucial role in powering the world’s digital transformation. As the demand for AI-related chips continues to grow, TSMC expects its revenue from AI server processors to more than triple in 2024.
