Trump Leaves Door Open for Venezuela Anti-Drug Strike

President Donald Trump refused to rule out a U.S. military operation in Venezuela to target Caribbean drug trafficking. He said, “Let’s see what happens,” when asked if American forces might strike cartel cells on Venezuelan soil.

Trump accused Caracas of sending drugs and gang members into the United States, calling the flow “unacceptable.” The U.S. Navy now positions eight warships, including guided-missile destroyers and a nuclear-powered submarine, near Venezuela’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

Washington also deployed ten F-35 fighters to Puerto Rico to heighten surveillance and strike readiness against transnational narcotics networks. Venezuela denounced these moves as a thinly veiled push for regime change.

Tensions rose further after the USS Jason Dunham intercepted a Venezuelan tuna boat 48 nautical miles off La Blanquilla Island. The destroyer held nine fishermen aboard for eight hours before releasing them.

Venezuelan authorities condemned the action as illegal and aimed at manufacturing a casus belli for expanded U.S. military measures in the southern Caribbean.

China’s foreign ministry sharply criticized the U.S. mobilization. Spokesman Lin Jian warned that the operations “threaten regional peace and security” and violate international law and sovereign rights.

He urged Washington not to use anti-drug efforts as a pretext to destabilize other states and stressed support for multilateral cooperation against cross-border crime.

Analysts note that the “war on drugs” framework broadens U.S. legal authority to use force without congressional approval. By labeling Venezuelan political leaders as narcoterrorists and cartels as terrorist groups, the administration gains flexibility to conduct unilateral operations.

Critics argue this approach blurs the line between law enforcement and armed conflict. Venezuela’s Exclusive Economic Zone extends 200 nautical miles from its coast, granting it sovereign rights over natural resources and marine activities.

While international law preserves freedom of navigation, warship interdictions typically require clear evidence of illicit activity in international waters or host-nation consent. The tuna-boat incident inside Venezuela’s EEZ thus raises legal and diplomatic concerns.

Regional governments historically resist U.S. military interventions in Latin America. They fear a return to Cold War–style coercion that could undermine democratic order and exacerbate humanitarian crises.

Local economies depend on stable shipping lanes, fisheries, and energy exports; military escalations risk disrupting commerce and driving up insurance and transport costs.
