Trump Aligns with Putin, Questions Ukraine’s NATO Future Amid Peace Push

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a significant shift in Ukraine policy on February 12, 2025, following a 90-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump stated that both leaders agreed to begin peace negotiations immediately to address the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has caused widespread destruction and loss of life since Russia’s invasion in 2022.

Trump described the talks as “highly productive” and revealed plans to meet Putin in Saudi Arabia for further discussions. In a departure from previous U.S. policy, Trump called Ukraine’s NATO membership “impractical” and aligned with Putin’s long-standing opposition to Kyiv joining the Western military alliance.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed this stance, labeling NATO membership for Ukraine as unrealistic and urging European nations to take greater responsibility for Ukraine’s security.

Hegseth also suggested that Ukraine should abandon efforts to reclaim territories annexed by Russia, including Crimea. This signals a potential shift in territorial concessions as part of a peace deal.

While Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, he did not clarify Kyiv’s role in the negotiations. Critics argue that sidelining Ukraine could undermine its sovereignty and embolden Russian aggression.

European allies have expressed concerns about being excluded from the process and stressed the importance of involving Ukraine directly in any agreement. This approach contrasts sharply with the Biden administration’s firm support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and NATO aspirations.

Trump defended his strategy as pragmatic, emphasizing the need to end the conflict and prevent further casualties. However, analysts warn that conceding to Russian demands risks weakening Western unity and setting a dangerous precedent for territorial aggression.
