The Chilean Navy will launch the third edition of the Avante Challenge at Innovapolinav 2022, the public innovation meeting of the Polytechnic Academy of the Navy (Apolinav).

Avante is an open innovation initiative launched in 2020 that focuses on solving the institution’s problems through science and technology-based ventures (EBCT).

These solutions are also expected to have potential applications in the civilian sector, strengthening the national research, development, and innovation ecosystem.

This activity is organized by Apolinav and the Directorate of Programs, Research and Development of the Navy (Diprida) in collaboration with the United States Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Know Hub Chile.

PROMOTING NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The director of Diprida, Rear Admiral Fernando Le Dantec, told Revista Vigía de la Armada de Chile that the challenge had become a tool.

It allows taking the connection with the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem to a new level.

Professionals from different fields and training are working together to help the Navy find a way to reduce the gaps in technological development in the defense sector.

Regarding the new version of the Avante Challenge, Le Dantec pointed out that it is in the phase of identifying, characterizing, and determining the gaps that mean managing big data for decision-making.

This topic was chosen because of its cross-cutting implications for the Navy, as data analytics models have applications in areas as diverse as shipbuilding and personnel health.

TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION

The first edition of the Avante Challenge, held in 2020, focused on solving maritime situational awareness (MDA) challenges identified by the Chilean Navy.

Acústica Marina was the winner of this version.

The company presented a vessel location system that uses hydroacoustic technology with real-time data processing to improve the quality of information.

The second edition of the Avante Challenge took place in 2021, and on this occasion, the tasks to be solved were related to the availability of marine resources.

The first challenge was remote diagnosis of technical systems and remote technical advice through collaborative tools and augmented reality.

The winner of the Avante 2021 Challenge was Jaksol, a predictive and prescriptive maintenance platform for technical systems that uses vital data measurements to improve the planning and management of naval resources.
