CEO Paolo Ardoino began recasting the story, arguing the headline number was never a true target, but a ceiling on how much equity the company might be willing to part with. He also pointed to internal reluctance to sell shares at all.

USDT, often described as a “digital dollar,” is used as a cash-like bridge for trading and cross-border transfers. About $187 billion worth of tokens are in circulation, making it the most widely used stablecoin.

That scale generates profit in a way that is easy to miss. Tether invests its reserves and keeps the income. Ardoino has said 2026 profit should exceed the roughly $10 billion estimated for 2025 and could surpass the $13.7 billion reported for 2024.

Tether has also been increasing exposure to physical gold, including a stated plan to place 10%–15% of its portfolio into bullion, and it has cited holdings of roughly 130 metric tons.

Two political narratives compete around these facts. A market-friendly view frames Tether as private-sector efficiency: a fast dollar rail that works across borders and challenges banking tolls.

A skeptical view warns that “money-like” power is concentrating inside a private firm, where trust is the product and confidence shocks can travel quickly.
