STF Justice Celso de Mello Likens Brazil to Hitler’s Germany; Claims Bolsonarists ‘Hate Democracy’

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The longest-serving Federal Supreme Court (STF) Justice, Celso de Mello, sent a text message to his fellow justices in a WhatsApp group comparing Brazil to Germany led by Adolf Hitler, recalling that, after being elected by popular vote “he did not hesitate to breach democracy” and stated that “Bolsonarists hate democracy” and seek to establish “an abject military dictatorship” in Brazil. The Justice also said it is “necessary to fight the destruction of the democratic order”.

Celso de Mello sent the message to his peers the day before a rally that took place on Sunday in the square opposite the Supreme Court. President Jair Bolsonaro made a point of visiting the Planalto Palace to greet demonstrators supporting his government and criticizing the STF and the National Congress. After greetings, Bolsonaro mounted a State Police horse, rode around the front of the Planalto, and left the demonstration in the presidential vehicle convoy.

The report on the inquiry investigating the allegations that Bolsonaro tried to politically interfere in the Federal Police is in the hands of Justice Celso de Mello. The denunciations came from ex-Minister of Justice Sérgio Moro when he left office.

In his message to his peers, the Justice, who must leave the Court on his 75th birthday in November, says that “mindful of the proportions, the serpent’s egg, as occurred in the Weimar Republic (1919-1933), seems to be about to hatch in Brazil!

“One must fight against the destruction of the democratic order, to prevent what happened in the Weimar Republic when Hitler, after being elected by popular vote and later appointed by President Paul von Hindenburg , on January 30th 1933 , as Chancellor (Prime Minister) of Germany (“Reinchskanzler”), did not hesitate to disrupt and nullify the progressive, democratic and innovative Weimar Constitution of August 11th 1919.”

In bold letters, the Justice highlights points he considers relevant in the text and says that Hitler imposed on his country “a totalitarian power system made possible by the March 1933 edition of the (Nazi) Law granting full powers (or enabling law) that allowed him to legislate without the intervention of the German Parliament! “Military intervention”, as intended by Bolsonarists and other autocratic leaders who despise freedom and hate democracy, means nothing more, in the new Bolsonarist language, than the establishment in Brazil of a despicable and abject military dictatorship!!!”
