The Pedra do Sal Monday roda de samba from 7 pm — the oldest samba site in Rio de Janeiro. The Pedra do Sal is the rock outcrop in the Saúde district where enslaved Africans arriving at the nearby Valongo Wharf gathered, where the Baianas de Tabuleiro — Tia Ciata, Tia Perciliana, Tia Bebiana — built the social networks that would give birth to samba as a genre. The Monday roda on the stone steps between Rua Argemiro Bulcão and Largo João da Baiana is a community event, not a production: musicians play pagode and samba de raiz, vendors sell food and beer (cash only), and the crowd gathers on the steps and the largo.
