Tuesday is when the Rio de Janeiro nightlife circuit restarts after Monday’s silence — and this Tuesday carries particular weight. The MAR runs its Free Tuesday from 11h to 18h — three exhibitions at zero cost: No Martins: Sortilégios de desvio, the first institutional solo for the painter of Black Brazilian life; the 36th Bienal de São Paulo itinerance; and Guilhermina Augusti‘s first institutional solo. The MAR is now Rio’s undisputed cultural anchor after Buren closed Sunday and Viva Mauricio closed yesterday. At the Theatro Municipal, the Orquestra Petrobras Sinfônica plays tonight — the city’s premier orchestral ensemble in one of the most beautiful concert halls in South America. At the Bip Bip, Tuesday is choro night — the weekly rotation that begins the genre cycle: choro Tuesday, bossa nova Wednesday, samba Thursday. The musicians gather from 8 pm on the pavement of Rua Almirante Gonçalves, and the oldest tradition in Brazilian instrumental music fills the Copacabana night.
