Republican States Deploy Troops to Secure Order in U.S. Capital Under Trump Order

President Trump issued an executive order on August 11, 2025, declaring a public safety emergency in Washington, D.C. He activated 800 D.C. National Guard members and surged over 700 federal agents from agencies like the FBI, DEA, ATF, ICE, and DHS.

Governors from West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio responded to Pentagon requests by sending additional troops. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey deployed 300 to 400 National Guard soldiers.

He described the move as support for public safety and regional cooperation. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster authorized 200 troops. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine sent 150 military police members in the following days.

Trump justified the actions by citing high crime and homelessness that hinder federal operations. He aimed to protect federal assets and clear encampments. Authorities removed 25 homeless sites on August 16, directing people to shelters or risking arrest.

Mayor Muriel Bowser rejects Trump’s intervention and insists things are improving, citing recent police numbers. But businesses and everyday people still see regular crime, and Washington’s murder rate ranks among the nation’s highest for large metropolitan areas.

In comparison, cities like Dallas and Houston—led by Republican mayors—report steadier progress with public safety. These cities use more direct policing strategies and community support, helping families and companies feel safer and encouraging investment.

D.C. officials challenged the takeover. Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit to block federal control. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes urged negotiation.

Parties agreed to keep Police Chief Pamela Smith in charge under federal oversight. Mayor Muriel Bowser criticized the deployments. She posted on X that American troops policing citizens on U.S. soil seems un-American.

Protests erupted on August 17. Hundreds marched near the White House and Dupont Circle. They chanted against Trump and surrounded Guard vehicles.
