Opinion: Gustavo Petro’s first year – peace, scandals and stalled reforms in Colombia’s presidency

(Opinion) As leftist leader Gustavo Petro celebrates his first anniversary as Colombia’s President this week, he finds himself between the rock of peace accomplishments and the hard place of relentless scandals.

His reforms initially promised transformative change but now stagnate, while the dark shadow of alleged illicit financing of his electoral campaign looms large.

In this first year, Petro has indulged in symbolic gestures, including showcasing Simon Bolivar’s sword, integrating Indigenous Guards into official events, and governing for a week from La Guajira, the country’s poorest region.

Such gestures ostensibly aim to honor the ignored populace, but they remain unsubstantiated by concrete policies.

“Petro’s government has shown a will to change, tenaciously striving for health, pension, and labor market reforms,” notes Professor Mauricio Jaramillo of Rosario University.

Yet, he laments the government’s inability to implement the people’s mandate for change.

Petro’s key reforms still await approval in a Congress once supportive but now increasingly estranged.

Moreover, the scandal involving his son threatens to erode support further.

Petro’s anniversary coincides with his son, Nicolás Petro Burgos, facing money laundering and illicit enrichment charges.

Allegations suggest that funds from a drug trafficker and businessman somehow funneled into Petro’s presidential campaign.

Though Petro senior has built his career on denouncing traditional political elites and their nexus with drug trafficking and paramilitary activities, he is unlikely to step aside amid these accusations.

Despite these setbacks, Petro’s push for total peace has yielded some significant gains.

The President embarks on his second year with a bilateral ceasefire agreed with the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla and remains committed to sealing a peace agreement before his term ends in 2026.

However, the intricate landscape of Colombian peace presents its challenges.

Petro’s ambitions led him to negotiate with five major armed groups and numerous criminal gangs.

Meanwhile, massacres and the assassinations of social leaders persist almost daily, with communities continuing to bear the brunt of the conflict.

Petro’s first year presents a mixed bag of symbolic progress, unfulfilled reforms, brewing scandals, and fragile peace prospects.

As he moves into his second year, the question is whether he can maneuver through these turbulent waters to deliver on his promises.
