Milei Advances to End Primaries in Argentina, Aiming for Efficiency

The Argentine Chamber of Deputies has approved a measure to eliminate the Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory Primaries (Paso) for this year’s legislative elections.

This decision, championed by President Javier Milei’s governing bloc, “La Libertad Avança,” garnered significant support with 162 votes in favor, 55 against, and 28 abstentions.

The move is part of Milei’s broader strategy to streamline the electoral process and reduce public spending. The Paso system was designed to resolve internal party disputes and exclude candidates with low public support.

However, Milei’s administration argues that ending Paso will simplify elections and save costs. The original proposal also aimed to suspend free publicity on audiovisual media, end public campaign financing, and increase private financing limits.

After negotiations, only the measure to end Paso remained, highlighting Milei’s focus on immediate cost savings and efficiency. For Milei, eliminating Paso offers several advantages. It reduces the financial burden on the state, allowing resources to be redirected to other priorities.
