RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil’s soybean exports totaled 14.9 million tons in March, against 13.3 million in the same period last year, data from the National Association of Cereal Exporters (ANEC) showed Wednesday, marking a new monthly record for shipments of the oilseed.

In April, soybean foreign sales are projected between 14 million and 16.3 million tons, ANEC added in a weekly bulletin, signaling potential for a new historic mark later this month.

However, the association pointed out that the estimate is based on ship schedules and therefore “considers the possibility of lower shipments of cargoes” in relation to the maximum of 16.3 million tons forecast.

According to ANEC’s figures, the record registered in March surpasses last year’s April volumes, when they totaled 14.28 million tons.

Consulted on Wednesday, ANEC said it expects Brazil to export 82 million tons this year, compared to 82.3 million tons in 2020. Private consultants, however, are pointing to Brazilian exports of about 85 million tons for 2021, which would exceed the previous record of 82.9 million tons in 2018, according to ANEC figures.

If the higher volume projected by ANEC is confirmed in April, soybean shipments in the first four months will total 36.8 million tons, surpassing the 35.8 million in the same period last year.

In the same bulletin, ANEC says it expects shipments of 22,000 tons of corn in April, which would raise the total shipped in the four-month period to 2.8 million tons, compared to 1.7 million tons in the same period of 2020.

Still, ANEC projects lower Brazil shipments for the whole year, around 30 million tons, compared to 33.4 million tons in 2020.
