Brazil’s opposition invites Lula to Venezuelan opposition leader’s hearing, sparks debate on democracy and Maduro’s regime

Brazil’s opposition has announced plans to invite former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to attend a hearing in the Brazilian Congress where Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado will speak.

The invitation aims to provide Lula with insights into the situation in the neighboring country, as the government of Nicolás Maduro has politically disqualified Machado.

Senator Sergio Moro, a conservative Union Brazil party member and former minister under Jair Bolsonaro, made the ironic invitation through social media.

Moro, who had previously sent Lula to prison in corruption cases, expressed his intention to have Lula participate in the Senate-approved hearing.

During the Mercosur Summit, Lula stated that he was unaware of the details regarding the disqualification of opposition candidates in Venezuela but expressed his intention to gather more information on the matter.

This statement led to further questions about democracy in Venezuela from leaders of Uruguay and Paraguay.

Moro shared that, despite pro-government lawmakers’ resistance, he secured Senate approval for the hearing to allow Maria Corina Machado to address the Brazilian Congress.

He emphasized the urgency of the hearing following the Maduro government’s decision to prevent Machado from participating in the 2024 presidential elections.

Moro intends for Machado to discuss the Venezuelan government’s actions and shed light on the challenges faced in achieving free elections.

The Venezuelan Comptroller General’s Office recently announced a 15-year disqualification for Machado, a prominent figure in the opposition and a favorite for the upcoming primaries.

The request to hear Machado in the Brazilian Congress was made on May 30, during Maduro’s official visit to Brazil.

This visit marked the restoration of relations between Lula and Venezuela after the strained period under Bolsonaro’s government.

Criticism of Lula has intensified following his defense of Maduro and his remarks on the concept of “democracy” being relative.

The invitation to Lula aims to allow him to engage with Machado and gain a deeper understanding of the situation in Venezuela.
