Brazil’s corn production in the Midwest exceeds that of the European Union

By · August 21, 2023 · 2 min read

Brazil’s Central-West region is set to achieve a remarkable corn harvest, outpacing the entire European Union (EU) production.

The region forecasts 76 million tons, while the EU expects about 52 million tons.

The EU ranks fourth globally in corn production. Among leading producers, they trail Brazil (135 million tons), China (277 million tons), and the U.S. (348 million tons).

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports France as the EU’s leading corn producer with 11 million tons.

Notably, France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, has frequently expressed concerns about Brazilian agriculture.

However, Brazil’s agribusiness stands out in terms of productivity and sustainability. Ignacio Ybáñez, the EU Ambassador to Brazil, has praised Brazil’s forest legislation as exemplary.

Currently, the Central-West accounts for 60% of Brazil’s corn yield. This output represents 6% of the world’s total corn production.

Mato Grosso leads within this region, producing 51 million tons, followed closely by Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul each with 12 million tons, and the Federal District with 380,000 tons.

Corn’s rise in Brazil ties closely with soybean cultivation growth. Both grains are alternately cultivated in the same area during a given season.

This farming strategy has enhanced soil usage, boosting national crop yields.

As a result, both corn and soybeans drive Brazil’s agribusiness, with the Central-West being the leading producer of both crops.

In 2023, the Central-West’s combined corn and soybean production is estimated at 153 million tons, nearly half of Brazil’s total grain harvest, which also includes crops like wheat, rice, and beans.
