Brazil’s Coffee Exports Surge in August

By · September 14, 2023 · 2 min read

Brazil’s Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé) reported a 29.4% increase in coffee exports in August compared to the same month last year.

In August, the country exported 3.67 million bags of coffee. Each bag weighs 60 kilograms. This is a big jump from 2.84 million bags last year.

Most of the exported coffee was Arabica, making up 72.2% of the total.

Coffee sales in August brought in $723.8 million. This is a 7.5% increase from August 2022.

Marcio Ferreira, Cecafé’s President, pointed out the role of Conilon and Robusta. These coffee types saw a 400% sales increase in August.

Total income from these sales has dropped 17.3% to $4.9 billion.

The United States is the main buyer of Brazilian coffee this year. They bought 3.8 million bags, or 17% of all exports.

Germany comes second with 2.7 million bags. They make up 11.8% of all exports. Then comes Italy, Japan, and Belgium.

Sales to China have risen a lot. They reached 602,000 bags, a 146.5% increase. China is now the ninth biggest buyer of Brazilian coffee.

Background

Brazil has long been a top coffee producer. The country has a climate that’s ideal for coffee growing.

This advantage has helped Brazil dominate the global coffee market for years.

Yet, the industry has faced challenges. Climate change threatens traditional coffee-growing regions. Additionally, fluctuating prices can hit farmers hard.

But the rise in exports shows resilience. Diversifying coffee types like Conilon and Robusta has helped. These types are less sensitive to climate change.

Brazil’s main buyer, the United States, has a high coffee consumption rate. This stable demand benefits Brazilian exporters.

Germany and the U.S. together account for nearly 30% of Brazil’s coffee exports.

The rise in Chinese demand is noteworthy. China’s growing middle class has a taste for coffee, boosting imports.

This could open new avenues for Brazil’s coffee sector in the future.
