Coronavirus Deaths in Europe Now Outnumber Those in China

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of deaths caused by the Coronavirus in Europe exceeds that of China, according to data collected up to midnight on Wednesday, March 18th. There are 3,445 recorded deaths (in 25 of 48 states), 218 more than the 3,237 reported in China.

The total number of Chinese cases is still higher than in Europe (80,894 in the Asian country and 80,529 in Europe), but the majority of patients in China have recovered, while in Europe the opposite is true. There are 72,237 people still sick in Europe, of whom 3,569 are in critical condition. In China, there are 8,043 patients, 2,622 of whom are in a critical condition.

According to the figures collected, the percentage of severe cases and deaths in relation to the total reported cases is slightly higher in Europe: 4.43 percent of all cases in Europe are critical, compared to 3.24 percent in China, and 4.28 percent resulted in death; while in China, it was four percent.
