RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazilian companies raised R$105.2 billion (US$22.4 billion) in the domestic capital market in the first quarter of 2022, reports the Brazilian Association of Financial and Capital Market Companies (Anbima).

According to the company, this is a record value within the historical series for a first quarter.

In a double-digit interest rate environment, fixed-income securities were the highlights. Companies raised R$93.5 billion in debt and other instruments between January and March. The volume was 32.2% higher than in the same period of 2021.

In variable income, there was a sharp decline in operations. In 2022, shares worth R$11.7 billion were issued through March. This represents a decrease of 63.6% compared to the first three months of last year.

“The high-interest rates and the reallocation of funds to fixed-income investments are hampering variable income,” says José Eduardo Laloni, the company’s vice president.

In terms of instruments, debt securities were the highlight of the period. This type of debt instrument collected R$55.9 billion in the quarter, a yearly high of 80.6%, according to Anbima.
