The Artist Brian Eno Spoke in Lapa: Daily

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Over the weekend in Lapa, Brian Eno gave a lecture on his creative process at Circo Voador. The artist, who has an audiovisual art installation “77 Million Paintings” at the Arcos da Lapa, made it clear at the beginning of the talk that he would not be discussing his famous seventies band Roxy Music.

The musician has worked with artists such as David Bowie, U2 and Coldplay in the past, however on Saturday the artist discussed topics stretching from art, activism, originality, music and politics in Brazil.

“In England, people with fresh thoughts do not participate in government. I do not like propagandistic art and manipulators of emotions,” he said.

“It’s important that people take a stand because they feel comfortable and not because they were directed by an artist. Artists should inspire people to behave like them, to think creatively about what they would like to happen.”

Eno had only positive comments to make about Brazil,  “I see more social projects here than many other countries that have good economies, like China” said the singer. He even admitted he had wrote a letter to his daughter that morning, giving her a list of reasons why she should come to Brazil.

While he wanted to stay off the topic Roxy Music, he was willing to give his opinion on other music. Eno believes originality is absent from most modern music “because almost everything has been done. The important thing is to experiment, there are many ridiculous ideas.”

The musician also talked about how we are living in the era of new art forms, in a time when anybody can do anything. Speaking of his art, he explained “When I started doing shows, I realized it was possible to paint the music.”
