Argentina: Girlfriend of Vice President’s attacker is the new target of the investigation

Judge María Eugenia Capuchetti is considering the hypothesis of a planned attack on the Argentine vice-president, Cristina Fernández Kirchner, after taking a statement from the material author of the attempt, Fernando Sabag Montiel, and his girlfriend, Brenda Uliarte, arrested on September 4 in Buenos Aires, according to local media.

Uliarte testified before the judge and the prosecutor, Carlos Rívolo, on the evening of September 6, and in her testimony, she cleared herself of the assassination attempt against the former president (2007-2015), although she did not deny having been in the area at the time of the attack.

Likewise, she described the assassination attempt as “an aberrant act” and that she was not aware of his partner’s plans.

Earlier on September 6, photographs were released from the cell phones of the accused in which Sabag Montiel and Uliarte are seen holstering the Bersa gun seized at the scene of the attack.

Security cameras in the vicinity of Juncal and Uriburu, where the vice-president lives, also showed that the 23-year-old woman had been hanging around the area for days before the attack, allegedly selling cotton candy flakes.

She, her boyfriend, and six friends of the couple, whose statements were also taken and whose phones were seized, were nicknamed by the federal courts of Comodoro Py officials as “la banda del copito” in allusion to the trade that unites them.

None of the friends, however, was in the Recoleta neighborhood on the day of the attack, although one of them said that Uliarte had derogatory comments towards the vice-president.

Likewise, the accused couple received a new accusation: the falsification of two disability certificates from the municipality of Quilmes, which were found in their house during the raid.

Both will remain detained at the Airport Security Police (PSA).
