After calling for new demonstrations, the Lula da Silva government calls on the STF to restrict acts

Brazilian federal government bodies are mobilizing to reinforce the security of public buildings in Brasília this Wednesday (11) after messages circulated on social networks calling the population to a “national mega demonstration for the resumption of power” starting at 6 pm today in all capitals of the country.

The Attorney General of the Union (AGU) asked Justice Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), for measures to be taken to prevent further acts similar to what happened last Sunday (8), when there was an invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers in Brasília.

The Presidential Guard and Army Police battalions will be on standby.

“It can be seen, from the post registered above (from the summons), that the Country is on the verge of entering with a serious situation, again, after the tragic events of Sunday, 8, when the world, terrified, watched the attempt of complete destruction material and immaterial heritage, in addition to all the symbolism that democratic institutions carry”, points out the AGU petition.

According to the attorney general of the Union, Jorge Rodrigo Araújo Messias, the call constitutes “a new attempt to threaten the democratic state of law, which must be safeguarded and protected, avoiding the abuse of the right to assemble, used as illegal. and unconstitutional enclosure for true acts that violate the democratic rule of law”.

The action also calls for the arrest in flagrante delicto of all demonstrators who occupy or obstruct urban roads and highways, including adjacent ones, as well as those who promote invasion of public buildings. Messias also asks that the right to demonstrate be momentarily restricted “until the state of normality is restored”. The government suggests the application of a fine of R$100,000 (US$19,240) per hour for legal entities that support the demonstrations, in addition to R$20,000 (US$3,850) per hour for individuals who participate in the acts.

“That the exercise of the said right to demonstrate be restricted, occasionally and momentarily, in view of the situation of absolute exceptionality (which, as well seen last Sunday, 01/08/2023, in addition to being abusive, was truly criminal), prohibiting the interruption of urban and road traffic throughout the national territory, as well as access to public buildings by such “protesters”, until the state of normality is restored”, says the AGU.
