Venezuela Stages Caribbean War Games as U.S. Flexes Power Nearby

Venezuela has launched sweeping military exercises on La Orchila Island, signaling defiance against what it calls U.S. intimidation in the Caribbean.

Ordered by President Nicolás Maduro, Operation Caribe Soberano involves about 2,500 troops, 12 warships, 22 aircraft, and 20 militia boats, along with drones and air-defense systems.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino framed the drills as protection of national sovereignty, declaring that U.S. deployments are “threatening and vulgar.”

The move comes days after U.S. forces reported sinking or intercepting Venezuelan boats accused of carrying narcotics, incidents that left at least 11 people dead.

Caracas insists one of the vessels was a fishing boat wrongly attacked, underscoring how quickly the anti-drug campaign has become entangled in regional politics. Washington argues its actions target trafficking networks tied to elements of the Venezuelan military.

In the background, the United States has been running its largest Caribbean exercises in years from Puerto Rico. Thousands of Marines conducted live-fire drills and amphibious landings, supported by destroyers, amphibious ships, a nuclear submarine, and five F-35B stealth fighters.

While U.S. officials stress counter-narcotics and disaster readiness, the scale of firepower suggests a broader message: deterrence of Venezuela and reassurance to allies.
